Debate: Is AdBlock Stealing or User's Ri...

Firefox has gained a lot of popularity among the Internet community because of many useful extensions. One of them is called AdBlock, essential to anyone browsing the Internet today who wishes to remove all the intrusive and flashy ads.

Is it considered stealing potential revenue from a website when you block their ads? Or is it a user right to do so? One popular filehost site Mediafire seems to disagree. A Firefox add-on has forced this company to give Mozilla a takedown notice.

There have also been continued threats from some website owners to target Firefox users and block them. However, this has yet to be followed through by anyone.

Do you use Adblock on Spiked? Why or Why not?

I wanted to know what the Humorists felt about this so please DISCUSS!

There`s always a mini-discussion when a member submits a screen cap/complains about Spiked ads** but a newsblog might get more people sharing their thoughts.

Adblock is fucking awesome. It`s not stealing potential revenue because I don`t want a fucking free ipod for throwing a shoe at Bush, nor do I need to go and meet girls on lavalife, or to find out what my fucking IQ is. That shit is fucking annoying, especially those fucking gay ads with the flashing colors that`ll give you epilepsy.

This is like the fucking window cleaning company that calls me everyday. Everytime I yell at the guy with the Indian accent to stop calling me because if I wanted my windows cleaned, the last place I would ever go to is their company because they`ve been such a cocksucking pain in the ass. I`ve been around the internet long enough to know that 99% of the ads are full of shit and trying to rip you off and convince you that "you have spyware" and I SHOULDN`T HAVE TO GO OUT OF MY WAY TO TELL THESE PRICKS TO FUCK OFF. I`ve already got piles of crap in my mail, in every direction I look when I take a walk downtown there`s some giant faggoty billboard or ad, there are telemarketers harassing me on the phone, shitty ass emails about big dick pills, and commercials on TV.

The people that usually click on those ads are dumb people or ignorant kids, and these ads usually give you some gay adware or spyware. When my 9 year old cousin uses my computer, I need ad-blocker and it just keeps my computer safer.

No I don`t use Adblock... mainly because I don`t use FF... AH!!! I know, right a software developer using MS?... crazy

Anyway on principle I generally refuse to consider any products who use hijack-style marketing. So if I`m getting redirected to axe advert then I buy blade... lol If I get popups in the background I make sure that I take note of the brand.

The companies all know that most of the guerilla adverts only really force name recognition and only in a few of those people will it be a positive effect, really most gawdy and annoying adverts are losing them money. So until they get a new strategy for attracting customers I say they should be glad that adblock is around stopping many from being annoyed by them in the long run. If we are proactive and savy enough to have adblock then we already know we don`t like their in the face advertising which is saving the companies from themselves.

I personally consider something that disrupts my online experience to be a off-putting. All the millions of ads OH webpages are fine and I have discovered new products or release dates of items by those. Dave Chappelle put it best in his skit on internet advertising by showing what it would be like if it happened in real life. "HEY BAWDDY!" If I were to be talking to friends on the street or going into a store to shop and someone grabbed me and removed me from the situation even for a few seconds I would be considerably mad, wouldn`t you??

I think the marketing on the internet needs to tone it down a bit. I mean every time I go to a website and get a strobe light ad on the top of the webpage it really is annoying. I would mind as much if the ad was un-intrusive but then I have gone to so many websites with intrusive ads I just use adblock on all of them.

Now what I would say to ad block is to not have ad subscription system by default that blocks all the ads; but let the user do it do the especially annoying sites/ads.

Websites need us more than we need them. Use firefox and adblock. But not on here because the ads aren`t too intrusive.

I behave like "atdragon84". Avoid any brand that uses invasive tactics!

I use adblock, I don`t really mind the banner ads or any of the ads that just sit there I can easily ignore those. But pop up ads and those really annoying fucking ads that make noise or expand when you accidentally move your mouse over them drove me nuts.

Also it`s getting to the point now where some ads are basically full video commercials, why should I have to wait for that crap to load so I can see a web page. Basically in my mind ads have just gotten too intrusive. If they would have just stuck to simple banner ads adblock would not exist but when you create ads that start inconveniencing and annoying users they are of course going to look for ways around that inconvenience.

My opinion it`s their own fucking fault there loosing ad revenue. when ads start opening new windows or loading video/audio I don`t want to see, they`re hijacking my browser and I have every right to defend against their hostile takeover of my internets.

Before I used ad-block, I would never click on any ads. Now that I use ad-block, I never click on any ads. So no it`s not stealing since
1. They wouldn`t be getting my money anyways.
2. If I`m stealing their money then WTF aren`t I any richer?
3. Refusing to buy/look at something is not the same as stealing something.

And one more thing, WTF are they talking about stealing. They just throw out that accusation and then the rest of the article is just them bitching and moaning. So until they actually give a reason why ad-block is stealing they can screw themselves.

Also, if I don`t want to look at their ad then it`s my right not to do so. You can`t force someone to look at your ad just because you put it up. And this is my computer, which means that I (not them) have say over what is and is not on it.

I started using ad-block in large part BECAUSE of Spiked, some of the ads on here were really obnoxious...in particular I remember a shaving razor ad that would expand on it`s own and block my access to some website features

fuck that...

how bout bullshit like "zap the mosquito".... fuck you, if you can`t make a reasonable ad, and embed it into your website, so adblock doesn`t block it, then fuck you.
