This was on "Real Time with Bill Maher", 9 October 2009. Maher, who "does not believe" in vaccines, gets a lesson in medicine from former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, a heart surgeon.

wow, Bill is so wrong on this subject its shocking. Look up Cytokine storm. It`s the reason why young healthy people died the most during the Spanish Influenza. How the hell does Bill think vaccines work? You use viral particles or attenuated viruses, inject them, then your bodies immune system learns to protect against that virus.

Wow and to my surprise I will have to disagree with Maher on this one, what is he thinking??? On what data does he base his opinion? Bill Frist was spot on, people should not advice other people to not get vaccinated.
On another note, I live in Mexico and I know of at least 3 people (young and middle-aged) that are sick from the A1H1 virus, and even though they are not dead, it`s pretty scary to think I could get infected with a potentially deadly disease.

H1N1 is no more deadly the regular seasonal flu.

That woman didn`t get the optimal medical treatment, no antiviral (tamiflu) at the begining (either she failed to go the doctor as her flu got worse, or the doctor took chances). As her flu worsen, it created an environment susceptible for a bacterial infection. Thus towards the end she was fighting both flu and pneumonia.

There has been some studies that says the pregnant mother`s immune system is tone down a bit, to tolerate the fetus, even though placenta does form a vital barrier btw mother and fetus. (Fetus if in direct contact with the mother`s blood will be detected as foreign tissue)

Generally, you should not advise a person not to get a vaccine.

i think 98% effective was said in there, and that sounds about right. these nay-sayers pull out stories of people who have been injured by a vaccine, and perhaps they are right, but still 98% chance it will prevent u from catching a deadly disease, what kind of moron would not jump at those odds? he was dead right to point out what dieases have been eradicated thanks to vaccines, i think he should have also added the resurgence of diseases like measles in areas where vaccination has declined though.

i remember a joke in a recent family guy got a scratch and said oh damn well that`s it for me, because in fact in times before vaccines a scratch would put u in danger of death from a tetanus infection, something unheard of today thanks to vaccines!

Ok, Maher didn`t say that people shouldn`t get vaccinated, he said that people shouldn`t get vaccinated against the A1H1 virus which has a highly debatable lethal potential. A flu virus is the most mutating little dragon you can possibly imagine and one reason for that is natural selection, by which I mean in order for it to live it has to change constantly in order to live in a host that`s been vaccinated against a previous form.

I`m guessing you all know what a vaccine implies and what you have to realize is that they`re not 100% safe. There have been cases where in an unaffected area people got vaccinated against a disease that had a very slim chance of affecting them (due to geographical reasons mostly) and a couple of people died because of it. If they hadn`t gone to get vaccinated they still would`ve been alive. This is where Bill Maher tackles the problem.

Statistically speaking if a populus gets vaccinated against a a disease with no prior mortality rate and allowing a few of the lot to die is far more effective than not inoculating the people at all. Sure the chances are slim next to null for a mass possibly lethal influenza outbreak, but the risk to almost certainty of killing others to prevent that is well worth it. I don`t wanna sound like a bloody philosophical numbskull, but numbers do not lie. You take the lesser of evils.

Bill Maher is an opinionated moron. WHO has clearly stated that 40% of the people who died of swine flu were healthy young people. This virus is pretty deadly in the sense it can cause severe respiratory problems . Who the fuck is he to advise people not to take the vaccine?

Frist is dead wrong about american health care though. Yeah, great treatment for cancer, but he leaves out how families go bankrupt as a result.

I say always use caution when getting one. I mean how do we really know? Company`s have changed since Polio, Small Pox, etc. So, just be smart, get it if you really think you should, otherwise just leave it be.

maybe we wouldn`t have so many viruses jumping species if we would take better care of our livestock. In today`s day and age we have a lot of animals piled together to save space and increase profits( seen some poor chickens who couldn`t even walk because they grow so fast that the legs can`t handle the weight witch is highly unnatural ). Some of them spend their entire lives in shit and piss thus increasing the likelihood of caching a disease and infecting each other if one is sick. Also their immune system is of questionable strength because of repeated exposure to such conditions.
