One thing they didn`t mention on the positive side of sick jokes: they can be a way of acknowledging that whatever is sick about them IS a sickness, and that we are above that sickness, above the danger of not recognizing the sickness and ending up trapped by it (like the person in the joke). The joke demonstrates the sickness for our shared ridicule.

Even jokes about tragedy, like the "how long to get down from the 87 floor WTC, the rest of your life". We sick joke tellers are not mocking the terrible terrible sadness, we are acknowledging it, paying homage to it, trying to rise above it. We just want to do it in a way that`s more fun than crying, which is probably about the only other response available. That or just going dead inside.

I think jokes come from an instinct of recognizing and communicating danger. We see something dangerous, but avoid it ourselves, and we laugh together to communicate and reinforce the recognition of that danger, and maybe as well we are double checking that our mates agree and that we are not mistaken. Monkey stuff.
