Scientist Reproduces Turin Shroud

The Shroud of Turin has been reproduced by an Italian scientist in another attempt to prove that the cloth bearing an image of Christ's face is a fake.

A professor of organic chemistry at the University of Pavia said he had used materials and techniques that were available in the Middle Ages.

These included applying pigment to cloth and then heating it in an oven.

Tests 20 years ago dated the fabric to between 1260 and 1390, but believers say it is an authentic image of Christ.

The linen cloth, measuring about 4.4m by 1.1m (14.4ft by 3.6ft), holds the concealed image of a man bearing all the signs of crucifixion, including blood stains.

Tests in 1988 have been repeatedly challenged, and scientists remain unsure how the image came to be on the cloth.

Scientist Luigi Garlaschelli, who is due to present his findings to a conference on the paranormal at the weekend, said many people believed that the shroud "has unexplainable characteristics that cannot be reproduced by human means".

But, he added: "The result obtained clearly indicates that this could be done with the use of inexpensive materials and with a quite simple procedure."

Mr Garlaschelli, funded by a group of Italian atheists and agnostics, reproduced the shroud by placing a linen sheet flat over a volunteer and then rubbing it with a pigment containing traces of acid. A mask was used for the face.

The pigment was then artificially aged by heating the cloth in an oven and washing it.

This removed the pigment from the surface but left a half-tone image similar to that on the Shroud.

Blood stains, burn holes, scorches and water stains were then added to achieve the final effect.

Mr Garlaschelli said he expected people to challenge his research.

"If they don't want to believe carbon dating done by some of the world's best laboratories they certainly won't believe me."

The Shroud is kept in Turin Cathedral and is rarely displayed in public.

^Agreed. You can`t challenge "faith". Faith really just means believing something without supporting evidence, which is hardly admirable. Especially when there is plenty of counter-evidence.

Whaddya gonna do?

Supporting evidence... Lol... There`s lots of supporting evidence for the existence of Jesus. It`s like proving the existence of Julias Caesar. You just read the history books and official court documents from those time periods. Not that hard. The only real question was if he was the son of God. That`s an ENTIRELY different matter. As far as Jesus being a person though... that`s hardly a matter that should be called into question because of secular (not Christian) history books and court proceedings.

We aren`t necessarily taught to blindly believe things. We are told things, then we automatically assume a certain thing is true or false. Think about it. Has anybody ever told you anything that was false (or true) that you later found out was actually true (or false)? Happens all the time. It`s human nature. Each person should investigate the evidence of anther`s claims, then make their own judgement.

^^control plain and simple. the church has always wanted for power, look in the times of kings they controlled more power than the king. if you were being pursued by the police force you ran to the church to claim amnesty. King Henry VIII had to make his own version of religion just to have a annulment, that and a few other reasons ie there was the irritant of the Pope claiming to hold the keys to government.

they say that "our religion (Christianity) is the best" i think they just got it right in making it you have to believe without ever seeing period. its a never ending loop and the father away it get from the time that Jesus supposedly "rose from the grave" the more that "faith" takes over.

National Geographic did a special about the shroud some years ago. Basically they cam to the conclusion that it was probably made my da Vinci, in a process akin to the photography and development process.

@TheMojoMan

I love your smug tone, as you write about something you obviously know nothing about.

Julius Caesar was indeed written about in his own time. Jesus Christ was not....at all.
If you read the Gospels, you are painted a picture of a famous leader who is known far and wide, and even the target of a king.
Yet not one contemporary document has surfaced mentioning him during the time he was supposedly alive, stirring up all kinds of change.

Now, before you bring up Suetonius or his 3 most commonly cited friends, do your research. 99% of people who think there are historical documents haven`t even done the base research to know that none of the mentions of Jesus were written until well after his death, and most of even those are well known fakes.

Happy research.

Also directed at Mojoman.

I disagree, what about Jesus Camp? Social pressure, what about if you don`t believe us, you`ll go to hell and suffer for eternity. That does not really sound like I`m allowed to make up my own mind. It`s called indoctrination for a reason.

@ LeighCedar
Actually Jesus is written in history books via the Romans. He was, however, seen more as a miltant leader, his preeching was seen more as recruiting and his followers were seen as a growing army. The Romans saw him as a threat and dealt with him.

So you guys really think, or know, or think you know for a fact that Jesus never existed? lol.

So many followers for a man who never existed. And you guys on the other hand, who do exist, can`t even get one girl to follow you to bed or listen to what you have to say.

Thats gotta make you feel less than nothing, init?
