Pandas Failed to Evolve, Let Them Die Ou...

A leading conservationist has called on wildlife groups to leave giant pandas alone and let them die out "with a degree of dignity".

BBC wildlife presenter Chris Packham says it's the pandas own fault that they have not adapted to the modern environment and they are only surviving because of human intervention, the Daily Mail reports.

"Here is a species that, of its own accord, has gone down an evolutionary cul-de-sac," Packham said.

"It's not a strong species.

"I reckon we should pull the plug ... let them go, with a degree of dignity."

He said the pandas' "cute" looks and demeanor has caused valuable funding to be diverted from helping animals that have a chance of surviving without human assistance in the future.

His comments were criticized by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), which uses a picture of a giant panda as its logo.

WWF conservation science adviser Dr Mark Wright said the comments were "daft" because pandas have adapted to the environment.

"It's like saying the blue whale is in an evolutional cul-de-sac because it lives in the ocean," Dr Wright said.

"Pandas face extinction because of poaching and humans moving into their habitat. If left alone, then they function perfectly well."

According to the WWF, there is believed to be more than 1600 giant pandas in the wild.

The organization said the panda population currently lives in about 20 small regions in China.

i got nothing against pandas but i kind of agree instead of giving the WWF money to save them why cant we just give he money to the poachers to stop killing them i mean they would be killing them for money in the first place right? and us moving into their habbitat, well fuck them move out of the way you stupid pandas were on top of the food chain.

^^ Get in mah belleh?

But he`s kinda got a point ... I mean, pandas are cute n` all .. but while we`re trying to save their useless arses there`s hundreds of other less attractive species in more dire need who, as he says, *do* have a shot at survival.

It reminds me of Xmen. The pandas are the regular humans, being protected by Xavier et al. But really - you all saw the movie - you all secretly wanted Magneto to win.

Just admit it.

PS - As long as Wolverine switched sides, of course.

First of all couldn`t we have effected the panda`s lack of evolution long before we had a interaction with them by changing the environment around them? Second of "BBC wildlife presenter Chris Packham says it`s the pandas own fault that they have not adapted to the modern environment and they are only surviving because of human intervention, the Daily Mail reports." isn`t that what humans SHOULD be doing helping animals keep up with the times when they can`t do it them selves? I mean we need to step up and do SOMETHING for this fucking earth

how do you help something/someone if they dont make an effort to help themselves?

its like drunks and drug users. we have programs to help them, they just dont want to. so just let them die in an alley. same for the pandas. they cant defend themselves. they dont eat anything else. hell they dont even fuck right to reproduce (they were given viagras to help them). hes right that we should focus on something else.

@Vicsand: No. We shouldent. Humans, as a species, are not obligated to do anything for any other species. Individual humans may do as they wish in that regard, but humans, as a species, owes nothing to the world

Fuck Chris Packham. No animal or insect or any living thing on this Earth can stand in the way of humans. We dominate everything, including other humans. There is no other organism on this Earth that dominates at such a large scale as humans do, and if there was, you can bet humans would wipe it out with a quickness.

There`s simply no other animal out there like a panda. Maybe there are bears in general, but they don`t look like pandas, same as the polar bear.
Once it`s gone, it`s gone for good. And believe it or not, there are actually people out there that appreciate animals, instead of saying, `let them all die.`

Keep along this track, and eventually we`ll find groups of humans that seem worthless to the majority, and we`ll leave them to die as well. We`re already pretty much on that track.

One problem is that nothing can evolve fast enough to keep with human progress. Humans took million of years to get out of the trees, yes fuck you creationism, we add new cities and new ways to expand every decade.

On the other hand, we do spend a shit ton of money on endangered animals. Animals have a tendency to find ways to survive. Just recently they have found dolphins they though were almost extint, but thriving. They also found school of whales of type of whales long though gone. Circle of life bitches.

I think the man is making that comment based on the fact that pandas are specialized eaters. Most creatures that specialized into anything have died out when things changed.

Our own human specie is supposed to have risen out of "generalized" species, whereas others like Paranthropus boisei went under. When catastrophe happens quickly the species that has more options generally does better (roaches have seen several mass extinctions by now).

We humans DO COUNT as an event for many other specie. "Mother Nature" is a neutral entity, and anything we do is going to work in her realm. We like to think we`re aside nature, but that is hardly the case.

HOWEVER, we also have access to WILL and COMPASSION (taken from bluefley, he`s right). We have control here, and we can either be a catastrophe or a savior. Pandas didn`t fail to evolve (which is a gross misunderstanding of evolution), we failed to adapt our own behaviors.
