A father in eastern India gambled away his money and his teenage daughter after losing at a card game where he put her up as a stake.
Ismail Sheikh of West Bengal used his 18-year-old daughter as a stake after he lost all his money, the Times of India reports. He also lost the next hand and his daughter.
It was unclear what card game Sheikh was playing.
Afterward, the winner dragged the girl out of the village under protest. Police launched an investigation to find her and retrieve her.
Family members were quoted as saying Sheikh is a compulsive gambler with a drinking problem. He has been thrown out of the family’s house since he lost his daughter.
Gambling is illegal in India, but underground dens continue to operate.
