Kids vs The Marshmallow Test

The marshmallow experiment is a famous test of this concept conducted by Walter Mischel at Stanford University and discussed by Daniel Goleman in his popular work. In the 1960s, a group of four-year olds were given a marshmallow and promised another, only if they could wait 20 minutes before eating the first one. Some children could wait and others could not.

Fyi, statistically speaking children who chose not to eat the marshmallow have a greater chance of success. The test shows which kids have an innate ability to foresee the consequences in the long run thus being prone to making favorable decisions in life.

I challenge the concept of Success here.
Here are five reasons why you should eat the marshmallow now
1) Its more pleasurably rebellious to eat it now
2) she could be lying
3) Things can change quickly in life, what if the fire alarm went off.
4) Maybe you have diabetes and it kicks of a seizure
5) Do you want to be a slave to marshmallows, studying for years and years, working your ass-off to potentially earn more marshmallow then everybody else, only to wake-up at the age of 60 and realize life has passed you by..well do you!

Irvine Welsh would eat the marshmallow, because life is a collection of experiences.

The best kids either stick it out until the end or eat it right away. It`s the ones that tried to stick it out and failed that have it worst. But this is child psychology, it can`t be used as a prediction of later life.

^I think the middle and last ones are the best because they didn`t take a gamble like the first. They at least thought about the decision they were going to choose

At best this is an experiment to see who`s hungry and who`s not. Too many biases. Should test a variety of situations (not just food). And the idea of waiting or patience can be taught into or out of, relatively easily when young (i guess). However hunger is not learned and is a strong influence on mood, behavior, concentration and grades (ref follow-up on school grades). Further, the hunger is a symptom of an unbalanced diet, which is likely to remain a problem. If I have an ok breakfast, then I`m ok, but just a coffee etc, then tend to impulsive and irritability. everyone`s the same way, and probably more obvious with 4yr olds. And impatience is often more of a virtue.
I don`t rate this experiment much.

However, I am a ginger-head with a soft-spot for marshmallows and candy/:-T
