Paranormal Activity: Evidence of a Haunt...

One film that’s already being touted as the next Cloverfield even more so than Cloverfield 2 is the recent Slamdance Film Festival sensation Paranormal Activity: Evidence of a Haunting. The indie, handicam-style haunted house flick, shot in a week’s time by video game designer and upstart director Oren Peli in his own house, has been purchased along with all remake rights by Dreamworks for nearly seven figures. In a stipulation that sealed the deal, Peli will direct the new theatrical version. The studio will most likely release the original film stateside on DVD; IM Global has the international rights.

Probably the worst consequence of developing your intellect in adulthood is the inability to be frightened by horror films. I lived on horror films as a kid, now they`re just meh.

^ Which makes the popularity of "horror" films with adults a potentially sad statement on the general (poor) level of adult intellectual development these days.

exploder: Dude, don`t pretend like horror used to be something better than it is today. Horror have always had the lowest production cost of any movie genre and that makes it the most risk free genre from a studios perspective. You don`t need a good story or character development to scare an audience, that`s not what people want from a horror movie.

The only thing which has changed with the horror genre over the years are the clichés and the effects.

Unless it`s a short story or they fill it up with a bunch of filler I`ve always had a problem with haunting stories: why not just leave the house and come back in the morning?

As long it`s not the torture porn that so many of these horror movies have devolved into the last decade or more, I might go see it. I prefer psychological horror over bloody slashers.

Horror 20 years ago: hulking monsters in hockey masks
Horror 10 years ago: Asian women with long hair
Horror now: motion sickness

^ Tada, I wasn`t trying to say anything about horror films now or then. I was commenting on Vizreel`s statement that becoming an intellectually developed adult prevents a person from being scared by them. Therefore the popularity of horror films with many adults might tend to indicate that they are less intellectually developed than we might have hoped for.

The common ingredients for horror movies today are credulous story back by misdirection + a loud boom. Some may argue the helpless hot chick is another element.

This one looks interesting. It has the handheld cam thing and is low budget but that`s its appeal. I`ve read several good reviews from people who have seen it on those festivals or screenings here and there.

If I remember well, it was bought by Dreamworks and a remake is on its way. They wont release it to DVD until after the remake gets its home video release (or something of the sort). Too bad the only way to see it right now is going to some selected theater in the US... :(

^ Reggycide, who pissed in your cornflakes? I didn`t say a damn thing about hating them, but I don`t/can`t find them scary, and that sometimes leaves nothing else but a lame movie.

Maybe it`s the same thing as with kids magic tricks, and very angry people on internet forums with nothing to say but who-gives-a-fuck insults.
