In the impossible vastness of the universe, uncountable trillions upon trillions of galaxies and stars and worlds. I think it would be a perfect irony worthy of song if it turned out we were ALL ALONE.

but really, I read an article that said the chances of life starting on earth rather than inside a comet, and crashing to earth are something like 24 trillion to 1 against. Lending alot of weight to the concept of Panspermia, stop sniggering at the back!

A middle aged mixed race couple in 1961? I think ol Carl`s making a bigger extraordinary claim.

i think that we`re lucky. We`re just far enough from the center of the galaxy to stay away from turbulent g-forces, nestled right inside of an arm that has stars relatively stable. Our moon has protected us from countless numbers of asteroids.

We`re probably not alone. But I`d take a guess to say that life forming to our level, especially given the time span that scientists have made on development, is rare. I`m sure that a few hundred million years, there would be races as intelligent as ours, and probably able to traverse the cosmos.

But, I think we`re the Ancient Race that everyone will be studying millions of years from now. Based off of how life has formed here, it seems we might have gotten a headstart in the evolutionary process.

BUT, who`s to say life evolves on other planets the way it does here? Maybe we`re actually super slow on the galactic evolutionary scale...

I do not care if I get voted down here but I am going to speak my mind.

Carl Sagan ,SETI and NASA can go get fucked. You can be skeptical but if you don`t investigate then you are just being dismissive.GO WATCH THE DISCLOSURE PROJECT and READ MORE INFO THAT IS OUT THERE.We have been deceived and lied to countless times. There has been a major effort by the powers that be and the media to cover-up and ridicule/discredit any people with credible information. There has been plenty of evidence but there has been a massive effort from rogue elements of the american government to seize and destroy real evidence.

"The absence of evidence, does not equate to the evidence of absence."

What the quote also implies is that the strategic removal of evidence from the public and media has created the "absence" of evidence.

Our radio/TV broadcasts haven`t gone far enough yet for anyone to know we were here... even IF they are there.

The number of light years those radio waves need to travel for us to be heard is absolutely absurd. The chances that we are still here when that amount of time has passed... very small. Good Luck us!!!

Sucks being on a cosmic scale... we are talking VAST people.

OK believers, follow this if you can...
The only way I can see it possible for alien life to know that we are here is if they had something to do with us getting here... like a terra-forming experiment..

They probably found our solar system by first looking for galaxies that have solar systems with rel stable orbits in stable places within the galaxy... A good choice would be one with multiple planets with which to experiment, especially one that has a BIG ole gas giant to sweep up most of the `bad` things in the solar system of concern... hmmm just so happens we live in just such a solar system, lucky us.
So they start with Venus.. play with the atmosphere to try to get it warm enough to sustain liquid water... they fuck it up the first time and have too much CO2, goes run-away -- 600 degrees and volcanoes up the ass.
Earth is next... they learned from Venus and get the temperature in line just as we enter the Suns habitable zone. WHAMMO they cause a life-baring comet (perhaps also seeded by them) to strike the earth, seeding the planet for natural selection to take it`s course... see what happens in oh say a few billion years.
They figure if try #2 fails, they got Mars next... what is it 20,000 years or something (number right outta my ass) till Mars gets into the Sun`s `habitable` zone.

Question in Layman terms: if another galaxy millions of years away that has a planet with an advanced civilization is looking in our direction on our planet to search for life-wouldn`t they only see earth as it was thousands of years ago in its primitive state due to the time it takes for light to travel to that millions of light years distant galaxy with advanced life?? and if thats correct wouldnt they see earth and be like morons, their still using sticks, stones and huts???

or am i completely off here??

Replace the word `UFO` with God/Jesus/Abraham/Joseph Smith/Allah/Muhammed/Shiva/Buddha.... whoa! Same conclusion!

^lol, if something is millions of light years away that means it takes million of years for the light to get here, not thousands ;) But uh, yeah, other than that, you are right. However, we cannot see planets that are millions of light years away, only thousands, in our own galaxy.... so we could potentially see life on a planets from tens of thousands of years ago, which could be either more or less developed than us.

^^^ The nearest known extrasolar planet is only 10.5 light years away (63 trillion miles), unfortunately it is like Jupiter, so no life likely there... and if we sent a probe there right now (instead of just radar signals), it will get there in about 400,000 years.

(63T miles / 18,000 mph / 24 hrsperday / 365 daysperyear = 400,000 years)

"It is known that there is an infinite number of worlds but not all of them are inhabited therefore there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds so if every planet in the universe has a population of zero then the population of the universe must also be zero and any people you may meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged imagination."

^^ Then we need faster probes :)

Helio 1 and 2 went 8.2 times the speed you mention there.
