Wow, they actually got into some serious topics there. At least they are on the path of looking deeper when trying to address issues. I just wish they could look deeper....

I can`t help but wondering how far any business would go to increase their profit margin? Like for instance if an anti-virus software company would spread their own viruses in order to hype up the urgency to purchase their product.
Would the pharmaceutical companies go to those extremes?

^ It`s not "would they?", it`s "how many times have they?". History is full of bad examples in every direction. Luckily, the smaller players can`t usually afford to get too dirty; it`s the big players that really go for the gold.

The bad behavior scales up: the more seed money, and the more potential profit to be won, the worse things people will do to rake it in, and the more work they go to hide their dirty deeds. Common sense really. So do you really like the idea of unlimited profit / wages? Seems like dangerous encouragement to me.

has a financing problem? lol, to say the least. in fact, its the only real point of interest. who really cares if the people on medicare like it, its entirely unsustainable.

i doubt few people who could get free gas for life would mind if the program was bankrupt.

i have been paying into medicare since my first job, but by the time i qualify for it will be gone if we continue using the program the way we have, and the way we plan too. so how can you use it as an example of a working single-payer system?

why no mention of the THOUSANDS of doctors who REFUSE to take medicare patients because the fixed prices are insufficient.

funny he brings up mass transit, as Amtrak is another fine example of a government subsidized service that should be dead. its a worthless money hole that has never, and will never be profitable. we where supposed to subsidize it for 3 years before selling it as a profitable company. in the fucking 70`s.

Well said, intelligent debate/discussion. Shame you guys aren`t going to get it unless some actions are taken.

I got the feeling Weiner really didn`t like Bill after his first joke. Took it like a pro though.

On another note, the topic really discusses the abomination the american healthcare system really is. Insurance and pharmasuticals are two of the most profitable industries, when their sole purpose should be looking after the wellbeing of their citizens. You can`t do both at the same time because one can`t AFFORD to be ethical.

health care was fine, and affordable in the 50`s and 60`s with the same insurance companies. it wasn`t until they started lobbying congress for favors did it all go to hell.

AKA: we don`t need a socialized system, we need government out entirely. no subsidies. no favors.

I have to agree with the removal of all subsidies. In a Capitalist/Innovation driven society that counts on those ideals to be sustainable there is no room for subsidies. It underminds the system and starts the county down the road to deconstruction.

In the same breathe, (opinion) I do not thing the US will survive it does not fix some key issues like healthcare.

Average Cost of Health Care in the US is 40% higher per capita than in Canada.

The average Life expectance according to The World Health Organization is 78 for the US and 82 for Canada.

The US is falling behind and I hope they can fix their Problems. (it is a cool place)

right, but Canadian health care sucks. there are some 850,000 people waiting for procedures right now. some hospitals aren`t making enough to pay their bills, a lot of hospitals have no available beds, some are under staffed. Canada also has fewer people then California alone.

Average life expectancy is not directly correlated to quality of health care. there are MANY MANY other factors.

The mere existence of subsides in any market, by definition, makes that market a non capitalistic, non free market.

^ Those 850,000 waiting are classed as minor. We have the same deal here in Australia.

If I want or need to get a procedure done that really isn`t any rush or danger, I will be put on a waiting list that is usually several months long. But if my wisdom tooth is coming through and causing me pain, a dentist will refer me to a public surgeon and the sucker will be out in several days time. Of course if I want a procedure done sooner, I pay private health (the dentist or another surgeon) for it or go through an insurance company.

Having a motorcycle accident almost a year ago I didn`t pay for the ambulance, the rescue crew, the drugs, the x-rays, the operation and metal put in my leg, the rehabilitation, or the morphine I could press a button to get shot into my IV whenever I got uncomfortable. And when I thought I could go home, the nurses and doctors told me that I could stay another night or two if I felt a bit worried and to come back straight away if I had any troubles. Then they booked me in for 1 month, 3 month, and 6 month check ups which were all free too.

I find it hilarious that you say a country`s healthcare sucks when their life expectency is 82 and better than yours. And you clearly know nothing about free healthcare systems either.

No, they are classed as elective; BIG DIFFERENCE. hip and knee replacements fall into the elective category. But there are also reports of people waiting months for life threatening issues as well. Plenty more reports of Canadians coming here by choice, or even being sent here by the Canadian health care system for procedures.

how about debating my statement regarding life expectancy instead of just saying i am wrong. are you suggesting that differences in diet and alcohol consumption have no bearing on life expectancy?

here, read these, and tell me what you think. so long as its not just a blind statement that all these news outlets are just lying as well.

^^ your reference of the Dental insurance in Quebec i think is a bit off topic, not every province offers that, and certainly not the Federal Government.

yes the Canadian system needs work.
The US has more Doctors per people, and our Doctors don`t make as much, (still they do really well) so a lot of them move to America to make the big bucks.

There are shortages all around, i know where I live in the BC interior cutbacks to our hospitals due to budget shortfalls etc really effect our hospitals (of the few we have since the population density is quite low). Yeah wait times for CT scans is around 6-8 weeks. Yeah wait times for hip surgery could be 3 months. But we pay less in the end than you guys, and satisfaction rates are very high in Canada. And our Doctor`s cant be sued to the extent like you can in the USA. And finally, ours covers EVERYONE!, which really is the trump card if you view your health system as a indicator of a country`s overall quality of life.
