God bless those merry Vikings and their murderous ways.

Although, I`ve always wondered ... the Vikings were such splendid craftsmen, shrewd traders, and excellent navigators. Surely there was more to them that rape, loot, and pillage? I`ve always wondered whether our perception of the Vikings was tainted by the writings of the Church. After all, the Vikings were looking to trade - after a poor trading expedition, the best place to pick up a little gold on the way home would be one of the numerous monasteries in Western Europe.
You pop in there, kill a few monks who resist, take the plunder, sail home and buy your wife a nice new dress. Everyone`s happy! (except the monks)
And therein lies the rub! As none but the men of the cloth could read or write, it must be that the tales of Vikings do hold a certain hunk of bias therein. It`s like asking the All Blacks what they think of the Wallabies - you`re asking the wrong people!

*ahem* Thank you for your time. Feel free to vote negatively. (^o^)

Uzo, to calm your mind, you should read Bernard Cornwell`s Alfred The Great Series (The Saxon Stories). He`s a historian and fictional history writer. There`s also some other stuff you can find online, and you`d be pretty surprised how people have gotten the vikings wrong.
For startes they never wore the famed horned helmet, in fact, their helmets were as simple as possible, as were their armor, to avoid tipping over in ship-to-ship battles.
They also were not ALL vikings. Viking, is actually the Nordic middle-age equivalent to Pirate. If a Nordic/Dane/Swede was invading, they`d be just called that. If they raped and pillaged and left, they were Vikings. But this raping and pillaging was much more of an organized thing rather than chaos burning and killing. The men were killed (unless they surrendered, then they became slaves), the children were taken in as servants (most of them would actually go on to be part of the family, like an adopted child) and the women were taken as wives, and servants, like the children. Of course, in the initial invasion, some raping was done... they had to take advantage of the moment, no?
One particular thing people don`t really know about Vikings, is they were the first "society" (if it can be called that), that actually showered / bathed everyday, changed clothes at least every other day, and had a remarkable good sanitation when it came to health. When we see Vikings with their long hair and beard, it usually means he was high-ranking, because first he probably was old and had all the wives he would ever need; second, he could do what he wanted, and that usually meant he would lazy-on to not shave, and third, if you were captured or defeated in battle, specially between vikings themselves, most of the time, they wouldn`t kill each other, just dominate them into a position of surrender. And cutting someone`s beard and hair was a sign of victory. So, most vikings had short hair and no beard, unless they were Captains or warlords / generals (whatever you wanna call it).
Funny thing is, the more you read on history, and go in-depth about actual historic behavior and society, the more you realize: in the last 2000 - 5000 years, we haven`t really evolved.... we have new tools and new bling, but the human mind hasn`t really become ascended or anything.. we`re just as smart / stupid as our ancestors, we just have more ways of educating ourselves.
