debunked-

The USPS is something of a hybrid. It is granted certain privileges that no similar private firm gets and some aspects of its management are quasi-governmental (e.g. the Postmaster General is a political appointee).

However, it is NOT (contrary to popular misconception) funded by taxpayer money. It pays for its operation from postage fees and sales of products.

so the claims of a government run healthcare system being a-kin to the post office is something of a red herring.

news: Aug 12, 2009

he last year USPS reported income from its operations was in 2006. Beginning in 2007, its fortunes soured and it began to report significant losses: $5 billion at the end of fiscal year (FY) 2007 and $3 billion in FY 2008, according to its annual financial report. On June 30, 2009, the third quarter of its fiscal year, the USPS reported a staggering $4.7 billion net loss.

Projected losses for 2009 and 2010 are about $7 billion, which according to the GAO, is unsustainable in the long term.

Oh yeah if you still don`t believe the government is using tax payers money to fund US postal service`s net losses. Check out their official financial report here.

P.S What would happen if a private company runs a financial record like that?

^ +1 for you. ROFL the sweet irony is overwhelming isn`t it? Everyone has the potential to be greedy and corrupt. But the common component to put corruption and greed into action is the government.

Non-political question: does the building dominance of the internet have something to do with the building USPS losses?

Political side: If so, then the right criticism is that the government has not responded quickly enough, but it`s fair to ask how they could respond.

I can understand though how it is difficult to scale back such a service, because it still has to reach the entire nation several times a week, unlike a courier company which only runs on-demand. With such a service, which is so deeply embedded into the formal practices of our society, there is much reduced wiggle room. For example, how do you hold people accountable for timely bill payment, when they don`t receive them in a timely fashion? It will take MANY years to switch to some alternative system, and the USPS will be hard pressed to profit while it becomes more and more obsolete.

It might be tempting to say that $7 + billion would buy a lot of computers and internet, and that they could be legislated as the mandatory replacement for formal notices. But it just ain`t that simple. It`s gonna be a long time before the problem is solved, and zealous ideological ranting about private sector this and government waste that won`t get us any closer.

^ Flynn, "But the common component to put corruption and greed into action is the government."

But the common component to put corruption and greed into the government is pressure from the private sector. Like lobbying, astroturfing, campaign donations, bribes, etc..

Your dogmatic knee-jerk reaction of "Blame the government" is just bullshit. Business has had its own flourishing markets in greed and corruption since the dawn of time, completely irrespective of governments.

And yes, governments are also dirty. They play their own repertoire of nasty games, and play right along with all that dirty private business.

It`s a chicken and egg concert of greed. Trying to say one always comes first is just foolish.

EG. Were those bailouts really just a spontaneous bad idea from a stupid government? NO! The private sector bought, staffed, and strong armed our government with threats of total meltdown. It`s Wall ST. that has been DELIBERATELY attacking, undermining, and infiltrating our government for many decades, to pave the way for this level of control and abuse. Your shining free market are brutal mafia tycoons behind their upstanding facade, and no ethics have ever stood between business and profit. And government gladly joins them.

There is one common thread: the perps are able to pull all this shit because they are too rich for us to stop them. They have taken over, and we are to be their servants and slaves. This basic situation has never really changed throughout history, just the names we call it and the way we count the coins.

Until there is no irresistible lure of huge money, we will suffer under the relentless attack of greed from every wealthy party who catches the scent and has the money to hunt. Public safety laws against obscene wealth are as appropriate as laws against rape, murder, and theft.

If there`s a case to be made that the government is to serve the greed and benefits of everyone instead of a few, then we wouldn`t be arguing which came first wouldn`t we?

^ and still UPS and FedEx only drive when they are paid, per parcel, at least $5 a pop. Their margins will be slim like everyone else these days, but their business doesn`t even compare with the reach of the USPS, or their tiny sticker price (stamps).

^ Flynn, in pure principle, I see the basis of your idea. But since when has business OR government ever followed all the rules? Do you really want to claim that business was all 100% innocent, when some dirty government guy came along and said "Pssst. Got a free set of keys to the public purse here, any takers?".

No, both sides are dirty here, ALWAYS have been. There has NEVER been a wall between business and government. They are the same rich guys, going to the same exclusive schools, dining together in the same exclusive clubs, holidaying in the same exclusive villas, etc., etc., ad nauseum.

And as long as they have all the money and make all the decisions and write all the laws, YOU WILL ONLY EVER SWEEP THEIR FLOORS.

You can forget about justice and economics and whatever other theories you can imagine. Until the public forcefully takes control and demands to share our wealth at least somewhat equally or fairly, we will stay on our knees begging permission and mercy, while praying for some lucky break.

I assume everyone is greedy. So government shouldn`t be picking favourites. Your point is however very thoughtful. Question still remains, what is the alternative? If rich people got together to lobby the state for special grants, the first thing it hurts IS the competition. They don`t want a free market to compete fairly. Want to change things, vote libertarian.

USPS is monopoly by the LAW. (Article I, section 8, Clause 7s) If you try to open your own postal business, you`ll be raped in jail and possibly raped again later after desert. Of course USPS is huge, imagine how big of business would I get if the government grant me monopoly for video games?

Flynn, I think you`re dense. Video games vs. 100% guaranteed universal postal service, from an era where that was a fundamental and critical component of operating a civil society.

You really just don`t grasp the magnitude or logic of alot of things, and make way too many points of threadbare logic. Your flag has already flapped to tatters in the wind my friend.

i live in australia, we get free public health care, plus private cover if we choose to pay for it. it rocks and we have a much higher life expectancy to show for it. if any yanks are so fucking stupid that they want to refuse this gift and stay in the 19th century with the poor african countries who also don`t have health care, rather than join the rest of the world, i say fucking let them!
