He forgets that the biggest funder of news media is other corporations, through advertising. This can create bias since the newspaper, radio station, etc., will be hesitant take positions which could compromise their advertising contracts, meaning they can be bias towards the interests of their funders. Just like a news source which gets a lot of information from government sources could be biased towards holding or presenting uncontroversial opinions or facts due to the fear of having their privileges, such as exclusive interviews with the president or other public figures, revoked.

One current example of this is the Glenn Beck-thing where many companies have pulled their ads from the show as to not appear to be supporting fear mongering and irrational views. Whether this will mean Fox News will pull Beck off the air is of course yet to be known but that`s a real possibility when you`re dealing with the fact that Fox News mainly gets money from the advertisers, not their viewers.

All this means of course is that corporate funded news is just as bias towards the interests of corporations just as government funded news is bias towards the interests of the government. In the US, and many other countries major networks are dependent on two things: information and funds; both of which they get from the government and corporations.

Sure major media sources can still criticize the government, a lot of people gave Bush shit for doing all kinds of shit (coincidentally these are also the ones which are praising Obama and the democrats) while there were those which praised Bush, (these are conincidentally they ones which are giving Obama and the democrats shit). I think you can see the pattern.

The only people who can remain objective and unbias are the ones who have nothing to lose nor nothing to gain.

There is no such thing as an unbiased news source, and there probably never will be. If a news company wants to lose a lot of money, only reporting the truth would probably be the quickest way. Most people prefer their news to have a bias toward their world view. I know I do, it makes a better show. The danger is in when we start pretending the bias isn`t there and start basing our reality on only these sources.

Tada: This "Glenn Beck thing" has sent his ratings to record levels. But, yeah, you`re right on the money. I`m not so sure a lot of corporations are actively attempting to control content (though certainly some are), but they are quite fickle to their interpretation of what America wants. (On which Manwhore makes a cogent point.)

I think it is ok to have biased media as long as we are aware of the bias and are willing to spend the time to listen to both sides, especially the side that we happen to disagree with.

I am totally ok with the fact that neither CNN nor Fox News are without bias. When I watch them both, they point out each other`s bias and inaccuracies, and reveal the truth in between.

you know, back in the day when there were just 3 stations (abc, nbc, cbs) with tv news, the news ALWAYS operated at a loss. tv news was by no means perfect or unbiased, but at least they used to respect it as the lifeblood of democracy, even if they made many mistakes along the way.
