Fuel burn is one of the most critical characteristic for any aircraft flying over our heads. Since EU will regulate CO2 emissions for this industry in 2012, they start caring about where to reduce the fuel footprint. Ethanol (or biofuel) is one of the most interesting ways to do so, but taking food to make ethanol is just moving the problem to somewhere else. So it is already clear that the biofuel to be used in aircraft will not come from eatable crops.

One solution is to make it from algae. It would make 30 times more energy than standard cropped field. It has a very big potential, but the major problem is the processes are hard to industrialize.

This whole nonsense of using farmlands to make gas is just crazy dangerous in every direction.

We need some green goo that grows in polluted salt water, eats CO2 bubbled into it, sucks up sunlight, bubbles out O2, and makes fresh new oil to burn. That would use solar to make oil from pollution. Still takes big sunny areas, but that`s what deserts are for. The boosts would be potentially very high solar capture, and no huge conversion costs to change electricity into a portable fuel.

^ Should the whole world change because Americans want it cheaper?

Cereals are the base of alimentation. Either you eat it, or you feed animals to eat them after, that`s your choice. But now we know we can bypass from food to fuel, two different industries are merging because some people has enough food to care about the price of the fuel.

Now, all the prices raised, most of the customers cannot afford it. They are mostly Mexicans and Africans. It`s sad.

I agree with this video no food for fuel

However I have nothing against using the byproducts of food stuffs called cellulosic ethanol - a fully renewable, advanced biofuel made from the processing of natural fibres within the textile, animal feed, and pulp and paper industries into fuel.
