The Christian Right isn`t going to be happy about this.

But they didn`t really make this very clear, this procedure will not affect the DNA of the child, only the kind of mitochondria(witch has completely separate genetic material) that the child will have in all of its cells. So this specific technology has no potential to customize human genes or DNA, only let you choose healthy mitochondria, for your child which will be exactly the same as if made naturally, just with sufficient ability to make the cellular energy, for a normal life.

I am a Christian who also has had a unique life having a cousin who has one of the rarest forms of Mental retardation Praetor Willi effects only 1 in 200k people. Much like Downs in effects the person who has it does not EVER develop over 4 or 5 years old in maturity. I can say without religious bias or ignorance this is one of those genetic disorders that no one should be made to live with. If there is a way to prevent it it should be used. We Christians believe we were all given a choice to be who we want to be and frankly this disease allows for 0 choice in the person who has it.

Woahh... this procedure will need to be watched closely. It`s full of foreseeable potential ethical problems in the short and long run.

The ultimate question would be to ask that if we are ready, or will ever be, to take control over our own evolution?

I`m always down with learning more, but I need someone to explain what was wrong with what I said instead of just being voted down.

From what I know mitochondria is completely separate form the genetic information(nDNA) that dictates everything about a person from their skin color, height, and hair to immune system and brain. Mitochondria serves one purpose to covert oxygen and food into energy, specifically ATP, to be used in different parts of the cell. Mitochondria disease can effect growth and mental capabilities of a person, but changing the mitochondria will only make the cells work properly, not change the cellular make up, much like putting gasoline in your Corolla will make it work properly, apposed to using vodka for fuel, but won`t make it a Bugatti.

It`s the fact that the mitochondrial DNA is outside of the nucleus(where the nuclear DNA is), that make`s this procedure possible at this point in time. The egg cell of a healthy woman has it`s nucleus removed and the nucleus of the woman with the mitochondrial disorder is transferred intact into it, where its nDNA and its mtDNA will replicate separately. Changing individual genes of either kind of DNA is a far more daunting task.

Or was it just that I said that the christian right isn`t going to like it, judging by what I`ve seen in the past I still stand by that too.
