Workers Fired For Tackling Shoplifter

Two students who tackled a shoplifter who was stealing from the store they were working at have been fired.

Jared Bergstreser, 20, and Colin Trapp, 23, were fired on Sunday, two weeks after they tried to stop two men fleeing the Best Buy in Broomfield, Canada.

When the students saw the men leave with what the assumed was stolen goods, Mr Bergstreser tackled one of the men, Denver News reports.

"A gentleman came by us in a red shirt with a bunch of product in his hand. It was pretty obvious that he hadn't paid for it yet," Mr Trapp said.

"I just kind of reacted. I wasn't thinking about it and followed the guy out the front door and tackled him," Mr Bergstreser said.

As Mr Bergstreser was struggling with the thief on the ground, Mr Trapp ran over to help.

"We thought we had the situation under control. That's when he pulled a knife and began flailing it around wildly," Mr Trapp said.

The man broke free and eventually cut the store's manager.

The shoplifters escaped in a car driven by a woman, according to police.

A police report said the two men got away with computer hard drives and other items but are yet to make any arrests.

"It was just completely demoralising. You think you have in your head what you know is right or wrong, what your parents instilled in you growing up as a child, and then to be reprimanded for that act is so sour and so sad," Mr Trapp said.

Best Buy spokesperson Kelly Groehler refused to discuss the situation.

"Employees who in our stores are aware, and trained, on the standard operating procedures for dealing with shoplifting or theft - which includes ceasing pursuit of a suspected shoplifter once they exit the store," she said.

Mr Bergstreser had worked at the store for nearly three years and received minor cuts and bruises in the incident.

He said he understands the company's concerns but disagrees it was enough to have him fired.

If you are dumb enought to actually care about a shoplifter, you should be fired.

That`s pretty stupid. I`d fire you man. I hate working for places where people don`t care about anything.

it costs less to let all the shoplifters go than to lose one lawsuit from some innocent person who breaks a collar bone by being tackled by store security

i`m not saying it`s right, but that`s the way it is

It`s ashame when the what`s legal is more important then what`s right. It would be hilarious if they guys that got fired worked for like a bank, and the manager who fired them came in and got robbed and they just watched and said "sorry, policy is to give whatever the theifs want". There was another incident of a guy who worked for a bank and chased down a theif and held him til police got there. No one got hurt at all but he was fired. I still say doing what`s right should always be held over what`s "legal".

Hey, hey. This is Canada we`re talking about here. We don`t allow vigilante justice. Or any other kind for that matter.

Yeah they should have been fired, he just straight out tackled the guy. They elevated a petty non-violent crime into something where the manager got stabbed and potentially killed.

If it was self-defense, then sure shoot the robbers, but this is not. The merchandise isn`t even worth anything to Best Buy, certainly not worth any potential bad press such as this.

Being laid off is just another way of saying you`re fired.

This is why society is going down the tubes. People are afraid to do or say anything to trouble makers in fear of a lawsuit or a beat down. When I was a kid old folks would bust my chops if I picked my nose on the street corner, now a days no one says a word to the thugs on that same street corner selling drugs and mugging old folks.
