If everyone held out then eventually the bird would stop doing it, but it would still be good for the bird if you dropped even a few scraps, that`s probly how the behaviour developed.

Never underestimate the myriad of wonderful ways that nature has adapted to we humans.

Kinda pisses me off that the vast majority of nature shows portray us as environmental ogres...kudos to Attenborough for showing us the symbiotic side that is so often the case, even today.
