Spielberg and Hanks, seem to have this obsession with WW2.

^Perhaps because it was one of the most brutal wars in living memory and, or to remind us of the sacrifices the men and women of the time made so that we can live the lives we do this day.
Although the cold hard truth could be that it`ll make money.

^Or perhaps it`s cause it`s the last un-ambiguous war--with clearly distinguishable good and evil--that the U.S. will ever fight in for the next 60 years. And won.

Korea was a draw. Cold War was a victory...kinda. The Banana Republic wars were questionable. U.S. lost Vietnam (again, questionable). Iran-Contra. List goes on...

Still, The Pacific looks awesome. Reminds me of Thin Red Line (the other WW2 film released alongside Saving Private Ryan) but more Spielbergy

WWII genre is an overplayed series, in both film and video games. Lets try something different for once. Or at least make the series from the German perspective instead of glorifying America for the only war they were useful in.

war eckoes:
It`s not about sympathizing with the Nazis but with the people who got fucked over by them and just to be clear, that`s the German people as well.
Your comment is a perfect example of how people don`t even understand WHY they were able to rise to power, why they were in such high regard, why people were willing to follow them blindly.
Today`s movies miss the shame, the apathy and eventually the rage that swept through the German nation after WWI, which was at least at partial fault of the Allies due to their demands of the treaty of Versailles (I won`t elaborate why since research should take you 1 minute max).
Nobody portraits what grounds allowed the NSGWP to rise in the first place, not the poverty, not the mental image, not the forced democracy they didn`t understand nor care for, not the propaganda.
But your comment also shows a pure lack of interest - willful ignorance, so to say. Honestly, that`s just sad.
I want to understand evil and how it is able to flourish.

To conclude my little rant: Not everyone in Germany during the 1930s was a Nazi. And as a German myself, I`d love to see a movie being made about these people who weren`t.

But, anyway. Looking forward to this one. I loved BoB as well.

Holy shit, i already thought it was never going to come out

edit
I agree with you somber.
I actually had an argument with a friend of mine whether the majority of germans were nazis in the 30s and 40s. Though it is true that over 50% of the population voted for NSDAP since it eventually came to power and banned all other parties, i still doubt that every german agreed with nazis especially during the war. What remained a bit unclear to me was that did my friend state that most of the germans were nazis in their hearts or did they just vote for NSDAP. He is not stupid though so i don`t think he meant that they were "true nazis" like in some movies. Afterall i guess they weren`t completely aware of the holocaust and the cruelties that were done in the east front for example.

So do you know what was the general opinion about nazis during 30s and/or 40s?
