^^^^^ The rod is to ensure the helicopter is the same potential as the power lines. A quick change in potential can screw up electronics on board and even with his suit, it would still cause a shock. Think of static in a way just on a higher current (amps) scale. Static is ~10 to 50,000 volts usually from carpet, just no where near the amount of current it takes to hurt you seriously. The helicopter creates friction in the air giving it its own potential -- the rod helps discharge/equalize it. It`s the same theory as a bird on a wire -- you`re fine as long as you don`t create a short to something of different potential (i.e. earth ground or the transformer ground [the `neutral` power line]).

As long as he is not grounded or touches something that is he will be perfectly fine. Same applies to birds and squirrels but make contact with that post holding the wires up and your fucked forsure. Science class FTW!!
