i just don`t get it - why it seem so important for the author to fill that compartment of "belief". Like reading the bible, checking other religions, why would you even care to do it...

Yea, I`m at about stage 4 or 5 I suppose on his scale. I do realize that the odds that some superior all-knowing being does not set in the sky watching over us, but I do cling to some ideals one of the most important being Karma. I just do this because being thoughtful and helping people out in my opinion is the only way to try to better this FUCKED UP world we live in.
P.S. sorry for the long winded speech just wanted to get my 2cents out there ;P

atheism and religion are both dogmatic.
both have already made up their minds and are not open to different views.
are you just not comfortable admitting that you do not know?
do you believe what you do simply in spite of the other side?

go ahead and vote me down because I don`t PRETEND--like some ignorant people--to know the truth.

^ Atheists always ask for evidence before subscribing to belief, how are they dogmatic?

I never believed in God to begin with because the first thing I`ve been in contact with were mythological tales from different cultures and when reading them carefully they sounded pretty much like the Bible... And if I`m told that those things are a bunch of crap why do they sound so much like the bible even though they are much older. And reading scientific articles completely destroyed the credibility of what I was being taught in bible school.
How hard is it for people to grasp the fact that for our specie to strive we have to live in harmony? A don`t need some invisible man in the sky to tell me that...

I wonder how much of his childhood insecurity can be attributed to being only 12 years old rather than his "religious indoctrination." Somehow by the age of 14 he reached the state of clear thinking? Did he not make a massive assumption in believing that if the Christian adults he knew couldn`t give him the answers he was looking for, then the answers don`t exist?

He never clarified if those Christian adults failed to give him any answer at all or if they failed to formulate an answer that made him feel secure again. At 12 years old, I doubt he could have known the difference, nor could he have understood the Bible (considering he was probably bound to literature at the 6th grade reading level).

His whole implication that religion is for those who can`t think for themselves is a groundless generalization. It`s a mere atheist talking point. Atheists never explain how so many of history`s brilliant human beings had no problem being religious. The best is when atheists say "well it would have been dangerous for them not be religious, they were probably secretly atheists."

Sorry, but I`m not convinced, but this video probably isn`t meant for me anyway. I guess it`s meant for people transitioning to atheism, hence the title.

^ haha...regardless of what your personal experience was, I think it might benefit you to realize that not all 12 year olds are utterly ignorant. I was around that age when I started questioning too, also at the height of my faith.

If anyone needs convincing, one thing they should do is to read the bible. I mean actually read it, word for word, and at least make an earnest attempt to go through the whole thing. Just relying on cherry-picked passages from others does not count as reading the bible.

My conclusions at about age 13 was that there was a higher power, but Christianity probably had some stuff wrong. It is very hard to rationalize everything that`s in the bible. Some of it is even just plain ridiculous. Over time my views have moved even further away and I`ll just say, try to learn more about the world, especially history. Then you`ll kinda get an idea of why things are the way they are.

I sort of agree with the concept of religion though, if you think of it as a form of control. I mean that in a good way, as in for the benefit of society, though we probably need some new updated religion to be more relavant to modern times. There aren`t very many better ways to get millions of people to obey, work together and do what you want. Go back and look at history and see how many wars have been started or controlled by religous heads and you`ll see just how powerful religion is. If you can get people to die for you, you sure as hell can make them do other stuff. Something to think about if you ever decide to conquer the world :P

I guess brain from "pinky and the brain" should have became a religious leader to finally take over the world =P.

But ya pamme i totally agree with you on the war and religion thing, religion fuels to many wars.

I`m not afraid to admit that I don`t know. Frankly, I don`t care either. I like what he said about doing moral things not because he was told to, but because he thought of it on a human level. As far as the 12 year old thing goes, I started to question God`s existence much later. I stopped believing at around that age, but that was because it was Church. Early, boring, and terrifying. It wasn`t until a few years ago (I am 20 now) that I started to think that there isn`t a God. But I don`t frankly care if I`m right. Believe what you believe, leave everyone else out of it.

Also, he didn`t spell it those words wrong. He`s from the UK, in case you couldn`t tell. Their spelling of things differs from ours.

I literally stopped believing in gods when I found out that Santa wasn`t real. Even before that, I remember trying to pray and just feeling like a dumbass. I believed that Santa would bring me presents, and even then I felt like "God" was a bit of a stretch.

I never grew up with it though, it was actually tv that gave me the idea of "God"(thank you, American shows!), my parents never encouraged or discouraged it, but when I told my grandparents that "God" didn`t exist, my gran looked straight at my dad with surprise and dissapointment.

I sometimes have to go to family events in churches. I`ll be honest, it creeps me out. I feel like I`m being immersed in a cult, because that`s really all that a religion is, a popular cult.

I believe in no god, no invisible man in the sky. But there is something more powerful then each of us, a combination of our efforts, a great chain of industry that unites us. But it is only when we struggle in our own interest that the chain pulls society in the right direction. The chain is too powerful and too mysterious for any government to guide. Any man to tell you different either had his hands in your pocket, or a pistol to your neck.
