I think the scientists are making too great of a leap in this regard... and I don`t mean morally.

After all, their tests with mice have proven that the sperm cells are bad/malformed/broken somehow. All the mice had deformities and died quickly.

Now they`re jumping to human sperm? They haven`t established they can make proper -mice- sperm. Their experiments have, so far, failed to make working sperm with mice. When they can master mice and understand what chemical processes contribute to sperm production, they can move on.

Seems to me these guys have gotten genetic material with tails, and therefore, have hopped on to make human sperm to claim "FIRST!"

And we all hate those "FIRST" assholes.

RH it`s hardly a jump out the blue if the mouse experiment happened a full 6 years ago. Neither you nor I are experts so i don`t see why you should decide when science can be allowed to move on.

As is any scientist with an inquisitive mind is going to stop and say, hmm, well we`ve been looking at mice sperm for 6 years now but i think we`ll leave it at that for now.

If as you claim your disagreement isn`t based on morals what difference does it make what species the stem cells come from?

^Yeah...this is for people who are infertile. How about I give you a swift kick in the nuts and we`ll see how you feel about this.

^Ted

I don`t care what species stem cells come from in a moral regard. If they had made the switch from mice to say... chimps then my comment would be just as relevant.

Just for clarification, I don`t believe there`s such thing as "outside of nature". It doesn`t exist and is a construct we humans made to impose limitations on ourselves.

Now that that`s out of the way, my concern lies within the science itself. Six years or not, thus far the scientists have managed to generate sperm cells. However, these cells are inferior, damaged, or just not workable.

If their aim is to just make sperm cells (impressive in its own right), then their goal has been met. Champagne for all.

HOWEVER, in regards to working sperm cells they have not proven they can make them. If their research is aiming to make sperm for use in impregnation, useful sperm, then they`ve shown they can`t do it yet. Which causes what to happen?

Back To The Drawing Board.

Which was finding out why their mice were born debilitated.

So, perhaps to clarify, if their aim is to make -working- sperm I don`t understand why they jumped to humans before mastering mice. It`s as if they`re making stopwatches that don`t tick and then head on over to their Big Ben project.

What is the likely result? It ain`t gonna` tick either. And if it does... then they have to found out why it ticks and their stopwatches didn`t.

Ok, perhaps i jumped the gun and I would agree with you red, but i think this report is misleading. The article below is interesting,

http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/156730.php

in it Dr Nayernia says

"While we can understand that some people may have concerns, this does not mean that humans can be produced `in a dish` and we have no intention of doing this."

"This work is a way of investigating why some people are infertile and the reasons behind it. If we have a better understanding of what`s going on it could lead to new ways of treating infertility,"

This of course gives a completely different impression to the one you get from the report which implies that the whole point was to create viable sperm for fertilisation.
When the Doc talks about helping those with infertility, i think he means researching causes of infertility and trying to prevent or counter it. Not fertility by using the lab sperm cells themselves.

The deformed mice lead to thoughts of mad scientists and retarded babies. And of course people wade in with the whole embryo controversy. I kinda feel that the media are playing up to people`s fears and have not taken the time to discuss the purpose of the experiment or its potential application.
