Periodic Table Gets A New Element

BERLIN (Reuters) – A new, superheavy chemical element numbered 112 will soon be officially included in the periodic table, German researchers said.

A team in the southwest German city of Darmstadt first produced 112 in 1996 by firing charged zinc atoms through a 120-meter-long particle accelerator to hit a lead target.

"The new element is approximately 277 times heavier than hydrogen, making it the heaviest element in the periodic table," the scientists at the GSI Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Research said in a statement late on Wednesday.

The zinc and lead nuclei were fused to form the nucleus of the new element, also known as Ununbium, Latin for 112.

The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), confirmed the discovery of 112 by the team led by Sigurd Hofmann at the Helmholtz Center. IUPAC has asked for an official name for the element to be submitted.

John Jost, executive director of IUPAC in North Carolina, told Reuters that creating new elements helped researchers to understand how nuclear power plants and atomic bombs function.

The atomic number 112 refers to the sum of the atomic numbers of zinc, which has 30, and lead, which has 82. Atomic numbers denote how many protons are found in the atom's nucleus.

Scientists at the Helmholtz Center have discovered six chemical elements, numbered 107-112, since 1981. The remaining five elements have already been recognized and named.

In 1925, scientists discovered the last naturally occurring element on the periodic table. Since then researchers have sought to create new, heavier elements.

Proving the existence of atoms with such a high mass, the so-called superheavy elements, is a complex procedure because they exist for only tiny fractions of a second and then decay radioactively into other elements.

I still don`t get the point of making these elements, yay for a fraction of a second we make something that has pretty much no uses, how about we spend money on something that is actually useful?

^How do we know if these have practical uses unless studied? Most great discoveries have been accidents.

Perhaps the goal is to utilize them once they can be sustained. Who knows.

Supposedly it has the longest half-life of any super-heavy element (+/- 30 seconds)

The goal is to find the "island of stability" as it is called. Scientists estimate it to be any of elements 114, 120, and 126 I believe.

^^ At you guys yelling at rednog about that element being useless:

you guys are making the case of seemingly useless discoveries eventually being saviors? what about the billions of useless discoveries that STAYED useless throughout the years ?

its a painful thing to say, but most likely element 112 will remain useless as it seems right now

^ Y`know, he`s got a point.

The vast majority of human activity is a deadend. For instance, I am more than certain that all of us here discussing this are not gonna do a damned thing for humanity as a whole.

Hmm fusion of atomic nuclei, this seems like a retarded area of research... oh wait, wasnt the sun created through fusion? Oh, maybe this can lead to an endless supply of energy? Ignorant cunts

I thought atomic number was how many neutrons and protons were in a nuclei, and proton number dictated how many protons there were... bad article.

btw Fusion junkies...

Fusion is a magic energy source, if we found a way too fuse large amounts of hydrogen or helium together with little energy put into a system, it would be some what of a miracle. The problem with fusion is that massive amounts of energy are required, extreme heat needs to be generated, and it is unlikely fusion will ever be a viable source of energy creation on our planet, do not be fooled into thinking that it is an easily exploited resource granted the technology is avaliable.

People need to understand certain aspects of physics, such as, to get a lot of energy out of something you need to put a lot of energy into a system, whether it be directly or indirectly, the most energy we will ever be able to convert will either be directly from the sun or from the Earth`s lithosphere. Hydro electric power although no actual energy is being chemically burnt up, huge amounts of gravitational potential energy are passing through the turbines this potential energy comes from the sun as water is evaporated into the sky and falls on nearby hills, this is high school stuff people, do not be fooled into thinking that because somewhere on the internet someone said fusion could be our salvation, that it is going to be. I`m rather sick of hearing about fusion, people call it dead end science because it is, those hoping to find "cold fusion" and shortcuts around to fusion are dreamers at most, and it is likely no results will be born of it.
