TEDTalks: Wade Davis of National Geograp...

In this stunning talk, National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Wade Davis celebrates the extraordinary diversity of the world's indigenous cultures, many of which are disappearing, as ancestral land is lost and languages die. (50 percent of the world's 6000 languages are no longer taught to children.) Against a backdrop of extraordinary photos and stories that ignite the imagination, Davis argues that we should be concerned not only for preserving the biosphere, but also the "ethnosphere," which he describes as "the sum total of all thoughts and dreams, myths, ideas, inspirations, intuitions brought into being by the human imagination since the dawn of consciousness." An anthropologist and botanist by training, Davis has traveled the world, living among indigenous cultures.

Great Talk.

I`ve wanted to try ayahuasca ever since I read "The cosmic serpent" years ago.

I agree with his basic thrust here, but I wonder how he would view the ideal ethic world.
With the example of Tibet, is he unaware how terrible the average person had it in old order Tibet? Sure, China is not exactly sunshine and roses, but you could argue that the average Tibetan is better off now, as they are no longer slaves in a a religious caste system.

Just food for thought.

^ i wouldn`t say english is the be all and end all of language, but i do have to agree with u that the loss of a language is not all that big a deal. other languages are interesting, but not important.

^ Every language has 99% fluff that is easily transated, and 1% unique culture. You can`t put a price on that kind of insight.

"other languages are interesting, but not important."
rofl what a silly statement.

language shapes our perception and our patterns of thought much more than people would like to believe.

Do you mean American English or Original Anglo-Saxon English? Or just England English? hrmm, so many choices for your seemingly simple statement
