I assume the bill he is refering to is H.R.1256

http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d111:H.R.1256:

From `Scientific American`;

"The bill, introduced by Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), would require the FDA to approve any new tobacco products before they`re marketed, and would ban artificial and natural flavoring of cigarettes, other than menthol and tobacco. Critics say candy and fruit-flavored cigarettes were designed to appeal to kids, and the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement between the tobacco industry and 46 state attorneys general barred companies from marketing them with an eye toward getting minors hooked on smokes despite laws that prohibit their sale to anyone under 18.

The legislation wouldn’t, however, allow the FDA to ban cigarettes, cigars, tobacco or smokeless tobacco products. It also wouldn’t allow the agency to require manufacturers to reduce their products` nicotine levels to zero."

I`m pretty sure that this won`t exactly create a black market for candy flavored smokes, at least not one in the style of other drugs.

One should say that the underage smoking in the US has dropped dramatically since the 90s mostly because kids know more about the dangers these days. My guess is that smoking will die out simply because it`s users will die out faster than it can attract new users. Either way banana flavored smokes haven`t really helped the industry a whole lot. Pointless regulation is pointless.

self-reliance, freedom, common sense, blah blah blah.....

that can`t really be considered when you have little kids being brainwashed from an early age that smoking is cool, while their ignorant parents drink a beer and sit in front of the TV...

Anyways, this clip is just an example of ron paul sucking the tit of big business again...

*sigh

The members of Congress that want the FDA to regulate tobacco products should stop considering themselves our parents and consider themselves our fucking representatives. If people want to smoke, they ought to be able to... if they want to do half of anything they ought to be able to as long as it doesn`t hurt anybody else.

^ miksah.. sucking the tit of big business....
your way off on that one, it may seem like it but ron paul is about freedom of choice and freedom of business hes not a corporate whore like my friend obama is.

Everyone knows cigarettes kill them but they smoke them anyway, we should educate people on stoges then let them decide

"I made a mistake in presuming that the self-interests of organisations, specifically banks and others, were such that they were best capable of protecting their own shareholders and their equity in the firms," -Alan Greenspan

I appreciate Ron Paul`s social libertarianism, but he should learn a lesson from Greenspan who after leading a laissez faire approach to US monetary policy(while keeping interest rates artificially low), and admitted that he made a mistake in thinking that if you let corporations/people do what ever they want they will do what is best for their customers. When you talk about an evil industry that puts radioactive lead and polonium in their products, it is insane to think that they will look out for peoples best interests because that`s what the free market philosophy says.

People that say that if people want to smoke cigarettes they should be allowed to, act like people say "you know what I think I`ll take up smoking". I smoke (down to just when I`m drinking), and almost everyone else that smokes doesn`t smoke because they want to, guess what we`re addicted. It`s completely different than people that want to shoot guns, or get married to someone of the same sex, it`s not regulating a choice that people make because they want to, or a part of who they are, it`s regulating companies that spend billions of dollars to get people hooked on products that they try to make as deadly as possible.

Cigs will always live on as a social function (like booze) -- people need their smoke breaks, convene outside and talk. This happens in blue collar jobs and this happens in colleges.

On the other hand, the damage the product causes really drains money when it comes to the health maitenance thereof. So in one sense, it`s wise to regulate poisonous things so that they are, at least, a little bit less unhealthy. After all, freedom doesn`t seem to guarantee us the right to incredibly unhealthy things -- like nuclear bombs or radioactive waste and the like.

I must say as well, I completely disagree with Ron Paul`s point about "assuming that peopel are stupid." You damn right we assume that: it`s because they are. Most elected officials will know this because they relied upon it to get elected.

No one is making smoking illegal, in fact, the new law says it can`t be made illegal. They`re just making it much more difficult to market it to children.

All this new law does is make tobacco an FDA-regulated product, like it should be.

I like Ron Paul more than most Republicans, but he disappointed me a little on this one.

so you people stand for freedom but want a government agency to regulate tabaco products? i don`t think you people know what freedom really is.

bottom line, its not the governments job to regulate substances of any kind. regardless of the possible harm this could do, you should all be willing to pay that price for the luxury of living in a free country.

^free country!? are you fucking serious!? The only freedom people have in this country is the illusion of choice. What kind of car they should get, what kind of clothes they should buy, what program on tv they should watch, where they can go out to eat. That isn`t freedom. Freedom comes from an Idea. The Idea that no one can control your destiny but yourself. In Amerika, the government decides what people can do, how long they can do it, and how much it will cost them. when you look at the financial structure of Amerika, you will find that most middle and lower class people are slaves, generally speaking. Like Ron Paul says, this bill is just more regulation on people and not the companies. Sure it will effect the companies but you have to understand how corporate operates when it comes to laws and regulation before you really understand what a bill like this means for the people.
