Senator Urges Tobacco Ban

WASHINGTON, June 5 (UPI) -- A Republican U.S. senator who also is a physician is seeking to ban cigarette smoking and other tobacco use.

Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla, a staunch free-market conservative, says lawmakers should stand up to the tobacco industry and ban smokes and chews, The Hill reported Friday.

"What we should be doing is banning tobacco," Coburn said recently on the Senate floor during a debate on a tobacco regulation bill. "Nobody up here has the courage to do that. It is a big business. There are millions of Americans who are addicted to nicotine. And even if they are not addicted to the nicotine, they are addicted to the habit."

While not outright banning its use, lawmakers have made buying tobacco products difficulty by raising fees and imposing regulations. For example, the popular State Children's Health Insurance Program is funded in part with a 62-cent federal tax on cigarettes.

The Senate also is expected to pass next week the Family Smoking Prevention Tobacco Control Act, which would authorize the Food and Drug Administration to restrict the manufacturing, marketing and sale of tobacco products, the Washington publication said.

"If we really want to make a difference in health and we want to eliminate dependence on tobacco, what we have to do is to stop the addiction," Coburn said.

Yeah, lets ban something thats helping some people cope with all the crap going on nowadays, and not focus at all on all the corrupt money hungry people in power right now. No problem.

It`s about bloody time smoking was banned in the US. It has been a drain on society for too long!!

(They just better not ban it here in Canada cause nothing beats a nice cool smoke after a long day).

Ban Ban Ban what good is it when you ban tobacco and say "HEY this should help out everyone!!" when in reality the government isnt helping people cope without smokes. no matter how much you ban tobacco products people will always buy it because people dont know how to cope without it and thats what our government isnt doing enough.

What are you talking about it practically is banned in Canada. You cant smoke indoors, you cant smoke in your car with kids. And the laws will continue to restrict the smoking of cigarettes as time goes on.

Get rid of the stuff. It never did anything for anyone other then the people making money off it.

Stupid Stupid Stupid...It amazes me that politicians have nothing else better to do than sit around all day and try to fuck the world up as much as possible for everyone else. Everyone in America knows smoking and chewing tobacco is bad for them, yet they still do it...why? Because of stupid fucks like this guy in office trying to screw America over more than it is now. Land of the free my ass. Although it will never pass its crazy to think that this guy is a senator and has the ability to make decisions that affect people. Whats next ban alcohol???? Ohhh wait that didn`t fucking work now did it? I`m sure here in America more people have problems from drinking than smoking anyway.

Sorry for the rant, I don`t even use tobacco but it`s the whole principle of losing our freedoms that really pisses me off.

Every time we ban something the natural way of man is to rebel and overuse it. Lets not ban it but make restrictions on it which limit its use. Telling people that you are going to take something away completely is a bad idea.

Plus, its peoples own choice if they want to risk killing themselves early for some little sticks of nicotine. We live in a free country and this bill pretty much spits on our constitution.

So I agree with irish, and I also dont smoke cigarettes.

I read an interesting study that suggest that medical care for smokers and the obese is far cheaper than healthy non smokers.
Why? Because they die so much faster.

So really, if someone wants to kill themselves with fat or smokes, we should let them. less burden on the medical system.

Let people do what they want with themselves. All this will do is create a black market and a source of income for criminals, as has happened in all cases, where a previously unbanned substance has become banned.

Do not ban cigarettes. That`s a really retarded idea.
Add like a dollar tax to them which funnels directly to the new medicare system.
If cigarettes are banned it will just be another thing gangs can use to fund themselves because there is a market for them.
