inspiring... a religion that doesn`t believe in a god... shame that throughout history, the story changed into some other types of Buddhism that is formed into some sort of deity based belief

hate to say this but im sure there are gonna be comments trying to flame this documentary just because its a religion... lets hope im wrong

atheists that bash on religion are no different from religious people trying to convert people... they both try to destroy each others beliefs...people should be more in the middle of the two sides... just like buddha said..."find the middle pathway" or something like that haha

I admire this religion. Although Buddha looks really stoned on several occasions.

Even though the story of his birth, life and how the Buddha left his Royal life behind is largely metaphorical, the teaching of the Buddha after that are quite profound.
The "religion" is self is more a "rule book" for how to improve yourself. Furthermore, unlike other religions Buddhism provides a clear methodology for attaining that improvement. (Ie Vipassana meditation)
Buddhism is unique for the following reasons:
No God (worrying about the presence or absence of a God dose not help you achieve inner peace.)
No hell (just returning to life on this planet.. which is a kind of hell sometimes).
No sin (original or otherwise, just unskillful action),
No real heaven per se.
No wars or crusades have been waged in the name of Buddha.
No evangelizing.
Overall it is my belief that Buddhism is method for attaining a more meaningful and peaceful life.

It`s still a religion. It still involves surrendering your mind to the principals of another. Notice there are no religions that say "Stay on the ball at all times and question everything." No, it`s always about dangling that carrot of mystery and promising the unfalsifiable. The way that guy right at the end smugly quips "It cannot be explained." If it can`t be explained then what is it? It isn`t anything, it isn`t even an idea. It`s a blockade against knowledge, against the journey to find natural, rational explanations. You call that enlightenment? It`s the enlightenment of ignorance. The enlightenment of experience is called science and it predates all religion. If you want to achieve enlightenment through ignorance, you don`t need someone else telling you how to do it. In fact, by definition you need to ignore everyone altogether.

Think about it.

... Or just forget it.

DoctorRandomercam, Buddhism is unfortunately split into a few `sects` of beliefs. The philosophies associated with Buddhism and the Way of Life associated to them are the original teachings of Buddha and the more modern one, Zen Buddhism. The religions you`re talking about are Pureland Buddhism and even the more hardline Taoism which are in many ways, similar to Catholicism Christianity and Shintoism which is a Japanese denomination of Buddhism mixed with folk religion.

The philosophy of Buddhism is a metaphor, where as the religions associated to it are just as hokey as Christianity and other mainstream religions.

HA! Hypocrites and pussies, all of you. You`re all about the fucking atheism show when it`s against something your high school teachers are into, but if there`s a chance you can look wordly and spiritual in front of your friends, you`re all "Oh except THIS religion because this isn`t really a religion, it involves techniques and metaphors, and anyway you`re only focussing on the fundamentalists, not us harmless moderates." Any of this sound familiar? You`re farting out the same arguments that you`ve learned to knock out of the park when monotheists use them. Like all religious prophets, Buddha is just the ancient equivalent of a celebrity cult. Either all of them suck or none of them do.

This is why monotheism still reigns supreme. Because even most of the people out there calling themselves atheists are really just bandwagon jumping posers who will pretend to believe whatever temporarily makes them sound intelligent. DON`T BE AN ATHEIST. JUST DON`T BE A THEIST.

(EDIT) I`m "very black and white." Are you telling me I`m too black and white? What the fuck does that mean? EVERYTHING is black and white. What is grey? How do you make grey? With fucking black and white!

"Yeah but you don`t MAKE the grey."

No but it is by definition the stuff in between the black and the white. So if I can see the black AND I can see the white, then not only am I looking right at the grey, I can see the whole fucking thing. Grey means nothing unless you know where you are on a scale of black to white. Well the strange, limbo-esque universe cultivated by this metaphor was never conceived with colour, so I guess grey is all we have, we`re all just floating around in this anonymous grey matter. And I`m the guy that says. "Thought you might be interested, there`s light over there... and there`s darkness over there. Are you sure you want to just... set up camp in the grey area? Sure you might not want to see what`s at the edge? I think I might sort of venture towards one of them. I think I`ll do white first. Something really intrigues me about light over darkness, something to do with a one and a zero... just a weird little fancy that my family has had for every generation since the very beginning. Bye then."

LOL doctorrandomercam trying to say other people is stupid while he know nothing about Budddhism. They don`t actaully tell you to "Stay on the ball at all times and question everything.", but they do say being mindful of your surrounding and yeah, they do encourage questioning everything. Also Budddhism does not reject science, and oh, feck it, I can`t be arse typing, just do some research before you trying to look different.

PS: I AM NOT A ATHEIST!

DoctorRandomercam, you`re very black and white and exemplary ignorant.

People make them what they are today. It`s like saying I particularly like the teachings of Sun Tzu or Hidetomo Nakadai. They are far from gods, yet they are in the same league as Siddhartha Gautama. The only difference between them is that people like Hidetomo is about maneuvering around a battle field (otherwise, social setting, personal relationships, etc) and Siddhartha Gautama was about focus and ridding excess.

Again, it`s people that make religion. Buddhism isn`t supposed to be a religion. You can`t compare Christianity with Buddhism. They have completely different foundations. Like I said however, you can compare Pureland Buddhism with Christian Catholicism.

PS: Again, I am not an atheist nor am I of any religion. I am not Buddhist. I am me.
