Girl Impaled In Dishwasher

A FIVE-YEAR-OLD girl is in a stable condition after a freak accident in which she was impaled on a knife in a dishwasher. Police say the child tripped on the open door of the dishwasher and fell on to the blade of a knife in the cutlery rack.

She is the daughter of a police officer stationed at Eulo in southwest Queensland.

The accident happened around 7.30pm yesterday at the police residence attached to the police station.

Police from Cunnamulla and an ambulance came to her aid and the girl was stabilised before the Royal Flying Doctor Service took her to Brisbane, where she underwent surgery at the Mater Children's Hospital.

The story needs correcting... she did not impale herself on a dishwasher. That is damn near physically impossible. She impaled herself on a knife, that happened to be in an open dishwasher.

Vote me down if you must but I put my knives in the dishwasher pointed up. I do this because I have a fair amount of expensive knives for filleting fish and just general cooking and chopping. I point them up so the tips wont get broken and the blades wont get nicked by other silverware. That is just my 2 cents. However, I would not do this if I had kids running around my house but I don`t. That is where common sense and responsible parenting comes into play. I also hate sharpening knifes, and try to avoid it as much as possible.

Um... I put my knives in the sink so and carefully hand wash them. So wouldn`t that be the most responsible method and best way to keep the knives clean and usable?

You`re going to ruin your nice knives but putting them in the dishwasher period. Hand wash them. You`ll have longer lasting blades, as well as life expectancy and blood flow.

I generally avoid this by... well, keeping the dishwasher CLOSED. When it`s time to empty, cutlery first. Unfortunate accident but could have been avoided.
