TEDTalks: Dan Ariely - Are We In Control...

Behavioral economist Dan Ariely, the author of Predictably Irrational, uses classic visual illusions and his own counterintuitive (and sometimes shocking) research findings to show how we`re not as rational as we think when we make decisions.

BBC did a similar experiment on a show i was watching. They give one group of people £20, flip a coin, and ask them if they want to gamble to win £50 or keep the £20. The other group they gave them £50 took away £30 and then asked them if they wanted to gamble to get their £30 back. Far more people in the second group chose to gamble despite the ammounts being the same.

he is absolutely correct...
life has enough complications in existence alone, so why the hell do people over-complicate the most basic modern tasks (such as filing taxes, etc)

Very insightful and a great argument to aid challenges against free will. But if he really thinks an advertiser with the same information as him would try to "make the world a better place" hes got another thing coming. Advertisement is all about tricking the consumer into thinking something is better than it actually is and advertisement exists in almost every aspect of an industrialized society.

We have to solve the problems of greed and corruption before we start tackling this. Bringing it into public and informing the people is the best way to start I suppose, but as he demonstrated, even the most informed individuals, like physicians, can make irrational decisions.

Know yourself
Know your limitations and weakness
Know your preferences

to extensionwire ^

Not to be rude, but the point is that even if you do know yourself and are informed on said subject, you can still be manipulated or make irrational decisions. Did you miss the point of the whole presentation? It`s called "Are we in control" I`m thinking maybe its there to help set up a thought process for you to work from, just a guess.

^A bit long? are you kidding? I relish the idea of taking only twenty minutes of my day to listen to years of research from these people just spill from their mouths. Shit the TED website has opened my eyes and blown my mind a few times.

Yeah they`re not all fancy and fun.. some bore me to sleep but learning these facts and figures I think enriches my life. So I`m glad for it.

I was wondering why his arms looks scarred so I googled him:
As a teenager, he suffered third-degree burns over 70 percent of his body from an accidental magnesium flare explosion.

I`m just gratefull he`s sharing the knowledge instead of just making a mountain of cash out of it. Seriously, this is one of the most important TEDs I`ve seen. I have already nicknamed him Dan "ORLLY?" Ariely
