I didn`t totally buy his reason there. It`s sort of like saying... Well, we should smarten people up against [GRAND THEFT AUTO IV or insert something else of similar influence here] because people can take it, use it the wrong way, become obsessed with it and go do something stupid. They`re basically holding a small section of Christians responsible for doing wrong by the Word. The question on whether a mum would rather pray for her daughter than take her to the hospital is all apart of that small section, as a Christian I am very thankful of such services. I believe a worse mind set are the people who believe they are superior to others racially, they would LOVE to kill or wipe out all other races and in fact attempt to do so. I can never condone shedding other people`s blood who don`t believe as I do, that is wrong, WRONG, WRONG.

likeomg, the point is that the mother who uses prayer to try and "heal" her child over taking them to the hospital is justified by her religion. In the view of Christianity, she isn`t doing anything wrong. Christianity tells her, God listens to our prayers, or God has a plan for us all, so just pray, and maybe the child will get better. Regardless of her mental state, the mothers actions are still being reinforced by an irrational belief. The mother truly believes she is doing the right thing to help her child because God is listening to her prayer.

So you can`t discredit the point because its a small amount of Christians that do this. The point is that with Religion, almost any kind of irrational behavior can be justified if it follows along the belief system.

Why dont they ever adress any positive aspects of religion?
Can`t they acknowledge that some people do get hope from "god" and thats a good thing. Personally I know some recovering alcoholis that "found god" and that keeps them sober.

It shouldnt really matter if one believes in pink magical elfs if that get them through the day? It`s a different story, If the pink magical elfs starts telling you to kill other people.

^^ Because religion breeds irrationality and complacency, and undermines everything great about people. It`s at its best when acting as a hallucinogen, that`s like saying let`s just get drunk constantly because it makes people happy. It might be fun, but at some point we need to get productive.

There are good sides to everything really, but you can`t just take the good and forget about the bad. Hitler did great things for germany. He brought them out of a financial depression and united the country. If we don`t mention the holocaust, or the casualties in WWII, Hitler was a hero. But you can`t ignore the bad. you can`t ignore the fact that the Pope says condoms increase aids in africa, or that children die because their parents refuse treatments because of religious reasons. The bad side of religion is just too overwhelming to beat the few good things it does

Not everything is negative about religion. As an intelligent person, I am sure you can see this.
A person can be religious AND can be as level minded as any atheist. It is not that black and white as you might want to think. I mean, These guys generlize ALOT. They cherry pick every negative thing possible.
Not every believer is a fundamentalist, listen to the pope for sex edvice or abandons reason, because they believe in god.

They do mention positive things that religious people do. They also say that there isn`t a single tangible benefit of religion that cannot be attained from secular means. The problem with most religions is that they don`t promote reasoning and rational thought. Religious thinking holds us back in many ways. The majority of people against black`s, women`s, and gay`s rights were and are the religious. The only people that I know of that are trying to retard science education are the religious.
The hosts of the show know that not all religious people are fundamaentalists. Their main problem with most religious people is that they think irrationally and vote for things solely because of what their holy books say. If believers kept their beliefs to themselves and didn`t try to impose their lifestyle on everybody else, then there would be little reason for the show.

I have tolerance for Christians to a certain point. If a Christian comes up to me and tells me that I`m going to hell and burn in eternal fire because I don`t believe in Jesus than that to me a personal attack and there for I must defend myself. It`s really the extremist Christians that I can`t stand. Keep it to your self and don`t bother me about it.

religious people often ask "why are atheists so upset?"

they can never understand what it feels like to be literally surrounded by so much irrational stupidity. its suffocating. i am deeply saddened by the current state of the world, and mankind.

we are so unevolved. we are infants.

on the other hand.. one of my favorite people in the world, is jewish. shes intellectually brilliant. she has an amazing heart, strength and mind. i admire her greatly. she just finished her degree in chemistry. biology. and god knows what else. she has a natural facination for the world around her. a rational mind for science and empathy like no other. she is better than me.

but she has a strong faith in god. it confuses me to no end.
