States Propose Welfare Drug Tests

Article Submitted by rhuitron.

Out of work? Need government help? You’re going to have to consider rehab first in some states, if new proposed legislation is passed.

At least eight states have lawmakers who are in favor of random drug testing for people who receive food states, unemployment, or other forms of welfare. Critics are worried that such policies would discourage people from seeking help, but those n favor say that welfare recipients should be working towards a future without government aid, which is difficult to do if money is going towards drugs.

West Virginia lawmaker Craig Blair, who started the website notwithmytaxdollars.com says that many jobs require drug testing, so it isn’t a huge leap to require it for welfare recipients as well.

West Virginia isn’t the only state that is actively considering welfare drug testing laws. Other legislation has been introduced to limit who gets government help:

* Yesterday, the Kansas House of Representations approved a welfare drug testing mandate. It now goes before the state senate.
* Oklahoma passed a measure last month that requires drug testing for those receiving TANF benefits. Missouri and Hawaii are also both considering the same regulations.
* In Florida, government officials are considering a bill that would institute random unemployment drug testing.
* Minnesota may soon have new laws requiring drug testing for all who get public assistance from the state.

Early this year, drug testing laws failed in Arizona, but that may not be the end of such proposals. In the past 20 years, such laws have also failed in other states, including in Michigan, where critics said it violated the 4th Amendment’s protection against unreasonable search and seizure. States must also consider the cost of such programs, since drug testing is fairly expensive on a mass level.

In December, over 31.7 million people received food stamps and unemployment rates were higher than they have been since the 1960s. Already, drug testing is required in six states for public assistance if you are a convicted felon or parolee.

by that retarded mentality they should also check if your money is being wasted into junk food, bad relationships or even alcoholics.

Hmmm, this one is a very interesting debate topic. I wouldn`t like my taxes going towards someone`s drug habit, but as Delt mentions, whats the difference between say pot and whiskey?

My socialist hippie side is outraged, my upper middle class side is kinda nodding in agreement.

Or how about decriminalisating the taking of all controlled substances making it legal for anyone to put whatever they want into their body but keeping the selling of these substances illegal. That way people won`t be afraid of getting arrested and getting a criminal record when going to get help for their addictions and the numbers going to rehab might go up

on the other hand...

poor peoples lives suck. drugs make them seem better. one might consider it self-medicating. i mean. sure. i COULD go on anti-depressants, itd be legal, and "moral" but that goes against my morals. i guess society and i just dont line up. societies loss. (ps, ive never collected welfare... i earn my $$$.)

Well no one should be able to afford drugs if they`re on Welfare....I think it`s a pretty good idea. I`m a smoker myself and I work all the time. I personally don`t think getting stoned is going to help anyone find a job or a better job...could be a bit of incentive.

Delt.
Yeah, That wouldn`t be a bad idea. I know it is kinda Police State. But when you are living off the country with the biggest debt know to man kind, Fuck you!

It`s been such a long time hearing of stupid fucking people like, Henrietta Hughes.
I have no sympathy for these people.
Same goes for drunk bums.
(Put there because of their drinking habit`s.)

It sounds bad man. But really, I have a sister who was the same fucking way for roughly more than a year.
And the only thing she ever lacked, was the fucking motivation to work.

Atleast I work to maintain my Drug and Alcohol habits.

It shouldn`t be drug tests, but monitored spending. If they would track WHAT people are buying, and cut off people who buy nothing but new clothes/junk food/bullshit things. I`ve got a friend on unemployment, making MORE than me, and buying xbox games and it`s infuriating.

People wasting away their lives on drugs is sad. Its still sadder that the state once more decides to close a door and try and shove the problem aside.

Perhaps the extra money they get from it could go into keeping drugadicts off the streets and cut their acces to more drugs

^^ piss off, we earn our unemployment. we pay into it for a reason. dont even think of considering EI like welfare. IF your friend is making more on EI than you do in work, then he works a FUCK of a lot harder than you do.

EI is part of the package. Im a seasonal operating engineer. i work 12 hours a day, 6 days a week, for just over half the year. i then collect MY EI. the stuff i cant collect unless i work enough hours. and the rate in which im paid is calculated off of my hourly wage. the time u can collect for is calculated off the time you worked. its part of the working package. your friend is collecting whats owed to him. and yer a dick for giving a fuck what he spends his hard earned money on.

did you know, there is a HUGE surplus on EI because so many people pay into it, but dont collect it. i count those people as unfortunate and/or stupid.

Why not make it mandatory for people on welfare to provide at least 10 hours of community service a week?

Psychological studies have shown that people who remain active and working have better chances of getting jobs after being laid off. They are also more motivated to find actual work as well.

I might be the only one but I think criticism is fucking worthless unless you can offer up something better.

I`d only say go for it if they also randomly tested government employees, elected and unelected.

"In December, over 31.7 million people received food stamps and unemployment rates were higher than they have been since the 1960s."

Ummmm, look at population too. How many "open" spaces in USA were there compared to 30 years ago?!?! Seems that every time I turn a corner another Starbucks is being built....or homes that used to be empty fields.

Soon the mid-west will be one f***ing giant shopping mall....then we`ll know we`ve run outta space here.

But seriously....W T F else are you supposed to do while waiting to get hired?!?!?! (after you`ve already called EVERYONE and put in all your apps?!?!?!)
