Remind Me Again Why Music Shouldn`t Be I...

This was originally posted by Collette Plantz. I liked and thought I`d share with everyone else. Watch this and then tell me why schools are cutting the art and music departments to save money. Blows my mind...

This sounds like propaganda for someone`s invisible friend.
Quite well sung but not the sort of thing I would like my daughter subjected to.

That was very cool indeed.

Why is it that when schools need to save money they always go for the music/arts programs? Why never the sports? In my area they`ve cut the music programs out of an entire district of elementary schools.
Music and the arts help us see more in the world than the ordinary and mundane. Do we really want our children and future generations missing out on that?

I don`t think anyone has put forward the argument that music and art are useless or shouldn`t be in schools. The screwing over of schools by political leaders is quite a travesty, but I can understand with a childhood obesity epidemic going on and kids roving the streets getting into trouble after school why they would elect to cut music before sports/after class programs or phys-ed. Really all these things need to be well funded if we hope to raise well rounded contributing members of society. That being said, I don`t think anyone really believes that music shouldn`t be in schools.

In regards to the propaganda thing I`ll say this. There are a few religious reverences in the song, however the song is "Viva la Vida" by English alt-rockers Coldplay. I personally am an atheist, and feel that religion has no place in secular society especially schools, however, that doesn`t mean certain aspects of religion should be completely walled off from society. I can appreciate religious art and music. Some of the general themes of religion are important to teach children. Kindness, morality, generosity these are things that are important to instill in children from a young age. They`re certainly not exclusively religious, but they are common themes in religion. As long as no one is preaching to my kids about Jesus and hell or ghost magic I have no problem with religious DISCUSSION or STUDY in schools.

Good video incidentally.

LOL sounds like some school board members BS reasoning to me.

Schools don`t give a damn about their overweight children.

Hmm well I remember my elementary school`s music program consisted of me playing on some brand new yamaha keyboards while wearing fancy headsets.

I remember being a kid in music/art class. Was the best times in school where I got to do something creative, an extension of me. It`s certainly broadened my horizons significantly and helped nurture a talent, or aspect of my personality, within me.

I don`t want to imagine the kind of life I would`ve had if I hadn`t grow up with art or music in my life.

How about: less school hours to leave more time for extracurricular activities such as arts and sports.

Just teach the elementary at school, and leave people to choose their own areas they want to excell in. I imagine that for certain people it`s no use at all to be in a music class (talents still counts). So: less school, more free time for the hobbies.

...and then Capitol Records sent the kids a cease and desist letter and threatened to sue for not obtaining the performance rights for the song. Then Capitol forced youtube and SH to take this video down.

But seriously, as someone who has devoted their whole life to music, this is extremely heart warming, especially seeing the kids actually feel what they were singing and having fun doing it.

I had music lessons and art lessons. But the curriculum meant that in music lesson we never learnt to play anything, and in art we never got to finish anything.

My high school didn`t have any art or music program, but we sure had a whole lot of state testing prep classes.

We need more instructors like this guy.

is it odd that I actually had the urge to clap my hands after watching this video?

I agree that more and more schools are urged to drop arts and music in favour of sports because there obviously more advertising dollars available through coke and gatorade at sporting events than at a music recital or Drama production. IT is sad to see.
