Flight of the Bumblebee

Manic musical composition that captures the sound and movement perfectly. "Flight of the Bumblebee is an orchestral interlude written by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov for his opera The Tale of Tsar Saltan, composed in 1899–1900." (Berliner Philharmoniker. Zubin Mehta, conductor.)

I have always wondered why they need a conductor. I mean they are professionals, have it written what to do on a sheet infront of their faces and have probably done the song many times

^ Yeah why not. A stage full of musicians left up to their own devices would be able to do this song perfectly, so cleanly, all without a conductor.

Guess again chowder head.
How about you become a professional musician and give it a try? Let us know how that works out for you.

^Actually there are several orchestras that don`t use conductor. It was in fact very popular in post-tsar Russia since it was considered a more democratic way of creating music. It sounds just fine, stop talking out of your ass.

To answer the original question; They use conductors simply so they have a more structure to the performance. Classical music is all about planning and making sure things go the way the composer wanted it to, when people start improvising and stuff, it becomes jazz. Which we all know leads to marijuana smoking and casual sex. If that is allow to keep going, eventually people are going to start sacrificing babies live on stage while chanting lovecraftian languages.

what are you guys talking about? THE CONDUCTOR, is the heartbeat of the band. when ever there is a tempo change everyone follows them, especially for a ritard(slowing down). same with accent notes, if there is a loud power note that has to be played by a full section it would sound awful if they all came in at differnt times. so they watch the conductor and all play together.

There`s a conductor there because it`s his decision how he wants the piece to be played. Therefore, the orchestra is just a tool for the conductor`s interpretation. So yes the orchestra players know the music inside and out, and yes they`ve rehearsed it, but it`s still the Conductor`s job to make sure that things are being played out exactly how HE wants it.

Why do you think that there are always concert reviews complaining that brass overpowered soloists or other issues? you need the conductor

furthermore

even if you had no conductor, what would end up happening at this level is people would follow the concert master (violinist) and each sections principal would follow his example, with the sections following the principals.

There`s always a leadership role

The conductor is to orchestra what a coach is to sports. I mean all professional athletes know the play right, why do they need a coach?Just execute the plays, right? The problem is what plays?

Yes, by the time you see the orchestra perform they probably can do without a conductor. It is during the rehearsal that a conductor`s value shows itself for the reason everyone else has mentioned.
