Take a leaf from Hitch whenever you`re arguing with religious nuts. Don`t just respond to their questions, don`t let them lead the argument. Just cut their shit down and get back to the agenda.

"Truth."

Hitchens is an idiot. And everyone here missed the point of the question and points the moderator made. Christianity says that those with cognitive disabilities or physical disabilities should be included as agents and having dignity. If we concieve of atheism as an intellectual enterprise, for the intellectually strong, rational, then we are exluding those with cognitive disabilities from that community. Further, atheism concieved in this way seems to think that if all of these things are intrinsic goods, then you think these people are worse off, bad, there is no hope for them. So the question is, what does this brand of atheism say about people with cognitive disabilities or physical disabilities?

Hitchens` response: If God knows what you are doing, then you don`t have freedom. If God, concieved as a father, lets his children die before him then he is a tyrant. God probably stands by and watches rape happens, this makes him a dictor. But if you respond to any of these points, you are saying you know the mind of God. Of course all of Hitchens points are false, if you really think about it. And he never answered the question or the points the moderator made, nor did it seem he understood them. All Hitchens did is back peddle and natter away. My guess is he was drunk.

^^ agrees

Hitchens is great with words. His understanding of world views is above par. His understanding of evolution is less then par. He missed a lot of opportunity`s to show how morality is in the animal kingdom. Animal behavoir isn`t always instinct. He expresses more of an opinon. Doesn`t back it up with research. I`ve seen many of his debates, at first I thought he was very good with arguments, now I see he`s using surface Religon to derive an opinon. Don`t let his british accent and choice of words deceive you.

actually drummermonkey, it seems you missed the point. The moderator wasn`t talking about disabled people, he was talking about christians in general and the fact that many atheists believe religious people are weak and stupid for needing something as ridiculous as religion to get through their lives. Your obviously looking at this from a very biased angle. And Hitchens isn`t claiming to know the "mind of your god", he`s simply trying to explain that IF your god did exist, hes a fucked up SOB to let his "children" be raped and tortured and killed without doing a thing to help them. If your god is omnipotent and can watch everything and everybody at once, hes a sick twisted mother fucker to just let this shit happen.

I watched the full version the other day. Just after the end of this video the chairperson reiterates his question, what does anti-theism offer in terms of hope for people like himself. And I think Hitchens concedes that he hadn`t quite answered the question and then proceeds to. But I have trouble remembering much of what he says because he`s too smart for me and always pulls examples out of some left field or speaks figuratively or requires me to join too many dots by myself. If only he was simple, clear and concise. Hopefully he`ll get that way when he`s an old man. Although this kind of debate probably wouldn`t get far if kept simple.

For the chairperson and lots of people I guess religion and reincarnation with a new body is there hope. If you can believe then the hope factor is probably a strong selling point. I know hope is important for many people, whether unreasonable or not, it seems to pull people along and have a good influence. But I`m an atheist and I have hope. Nothing as fantastical as reincarnation or heaven of course. For example hope for my own ability, nature, chance, medicine etc. If my legs were cut off and I couldn`t accept it, to avoid endless depression I would probably hope for something like regeneration or bionic prosthetics or something similarly unrealistic for the future, so I could then sanely figure out how to get along with daily life.

The christian guy asked a very stupid question using very flawed logic.

The implied gist of it went something like:

"Who cares if my religion is true or not, it functions as a rather effective placebo for those too inept to see that it`s a sugar pill--what does atheism offer that`s any better?"

Richard Dawkins had offered a very poignant and direct answer to this question in a radio interview I heard several months back.

Unfortunately, however, Hitchens hardly answered the question at all. Instead, he chose not to speak in concrete terms, but more of this emotional appeal crap.

The gist of it went something like:
#1. "A god would see me naked in the shower and live longer than me. Also, it sucks to be punished for evil!"
#2. "Bad people hurt innocent people. It is immoral to look at the bigger picture. Also, why doesn`t God punish evil?"

Sure, I suppose he was speaking on the level of the idiot who asked the question. Instead of speaking in CONCRETE terms, they argued over the PSYCHOLOGICAL and preferential pros and cons of religion vs. atheism.

Hitchens essentially said that Atheism is better psychologically because you don`t have to fear a Big Brother in the sky. However, I think that doesn`t even compare to the psychological benefits of removing fear of death and uncertainty that religion brings.

Religious dude - 0
Hitches - 0

I wonder why spiked likes this guy? Sam Harris is so much more logical and eloquent. Dawkins is a little rough around the edges with his reasoning and methodologies, but is far superior to Hitchens. Hell, even Daniel Dennett brings more to the table. I suggest you guys look into them.

Also, look up QualiaSoup on YouTube. He`s the real deal.

You guys aren`t doing atheism any favors by spreading Hitchens around. Then again, no creed deserves favors. Only the truth. So it works out in the end.
