5/5 prof, and well deserved.

It`s just too bad a good discussion was so _polluted by religious twaddle. Hitchens is a trooper, delving into such muck to spread sense. Too much white noise for me to stomach in a venue like that.

I wish Hitchens would close the moral argument though: if us stupid human monkeys don`t own our biological moral imperative, WE WILL PROBABLY GO EXTINCT BY OUR OWN STUPID ACTIONS. The golden rule isn`t just a good idea, it`s a neccessary biological adaptation that has taken millions of years of evolution to refine, it is our only hope for survival. If that`s not serious enough to merit validity and moral authority in a universe where everything is just "fizzing", then I don`t know what is. It seems much more urgent and compelling than hell or sin or whatever junk those goddies are fretting about.

I see it as the most wicked travesty that religion muddies the waters of moral understanding by pushing (like bad drugs) a bunch of mythological nonsense. This is a time when the survival stakes are very high, and we have in our grasp a TRUE rational understanding of the absolute biological moral imperative to intelligent compassion. If weakness, ignorance, or stupidity are a human obstacle to getting this fundamental point and owning it, then we must solve those problems too. We cannot sidestep the urgent need for wisdom by leaning on a fear of an imaginary hell.

I`m paraphrasing here, but this is a quote from the first guy. Issac Newton himself once came to such a conclusion when his own mind couldn`t wrap itself around the enormous complexity of space. Today, the things that Issac Newton gave up to `god did it`, we now know the answers to.

Just because his mind can`t grasp it, doesn`t mean that it isn`t natural.

Religion is an archaic system of control meant to scare and force primitive non scientifically thinking minds into submission and apathy. And to explain to those same minds anything that does not readily explain itself, religion says this: "I can not explain this so god must be the reason for its existence." In other words the religious person says "I can not explain this so I can explain this."

Religion has been replaced by government. Laws have replaced commandments. Hell has been replaced by Prison. Left to their own devices good people will do good things, and bad people will do evil things. It takes religion to make a good person justify doing an evil thing. Religion is the root of all evil.

Religion today serves only to slow the evolution of peace and understanding. More people have been killed in the name of god then for any other reason. Instead of becoming one human civilization which in peace explores our universe for all eternity we squabble over whose invisible man in the sky is the right invisible man in the sky. Instead we take basic human rights away from people whose sexual preference is different from our own. Instead we ignore the possible medical discoveries which stem cell research could give us.
Instead we kill each other over a strip of desert wasteland called Jerusalem.

That suspenders asshole has to be a lawyer to wait to the end just to summarize everything in a twisted fashion to make it seem like they won. Thats the whole problem with argueing religion in the first place-ultimately confirmation bias (a psychological phenomenom) is what drives most of these arguements and for the most part assures that they will never end. Yet again it all boils down to this - you either believe in the boogey man or you don`t there is no proof for either but there is a ton of speculation.

if i was there i would shame all those people who believed in christianity/god of christian. FIRST OF ALL has anyone actually seen god in reality aside from their dreams/thoughts?? One thing I wish would have been brought out was the idea of "Answered Prayers".... When Hitchens brought up the dungeon woman, I wish he would have said something along the lines of how her, not only, did she pray everyday for an intervention, but how her prayers were never answered,..And follow with the idiot who stated "God" hears you, and ask him about why god heard them, but not the woman in the dungeon....

Bottom line is that, it`s bullshit people.. Christianity, Islam, Judean etc. It`s three things; control, power, and fear mongering. No more, no less......
