The guitarist could put a little more energy into it, or look like he`s enjoying what he`s doing.

There`s another good clip of Fredrik Thordendal sitting in on guitar with Morgan Agren in a club and playing this stuff. It`s with a full band including another guitar player so he plays all the lead stuff. I`ll post it.

mindovermatter really just...just no. For sure this is not remotely technical right or left hand work (for the guitarist) but to say that this is easy shows a staggering lack of music knowledge. It is the rhythms here that make the piece impressive, they are playing with polyrythms and insane time signatures and are tight as hell, the drummer is amazing. One miniscule timing fuck up from either of them would destroy the whole thing. Its walking on a tightrope the whole time yet they make it sound so easy.

I am not really a fan of this stuff because I think it is a bit pretentious and although I appreciate the rhythmic complexity it would be nice if the guitarist mixed it up a bit instead of sticking to just muted power chords..that being said its still cool to watch from time to time, thanks for the upload!

lol it doesn`t matter if they are using non averege time signatures. the most important factor in good music is that the music sounds good. anyone who thinks these riffs sounds good needs to clean their fuckin ears out. please, can you honestly tell me that these are good sounding riffs? if you can then you need to stop commenting on videos and ask your doctor if paxil is right for you. i SHIT better riffs then this - as does any half decent musician. this is nothing more then some metalica wannabe.

are you really saying that im supposed to think this is good just because they are using polyrythms and `insane time signatures`??? get real, the least important factor in music is the technical aspect and the most important is sounding good - everyone knows this. tell me this, do you think this guy is a great guitar player or something??

leave the drummer out of it im not even talking about him. hes fine.

please answer me this.. does it not matter that the riffs sound like garbage???

next you`re going to be telling me that dragonforce is good because they play as fast as they possibly can.

You know I see it this way. I listen to lot`s of different types of music and most of them have somekind of gimmick that keeps me interested in them.

Meshuggah`s "thing" happens to be polyrythms and heavy guitars, some other band (like Tool) have totally different approach to theyre music and that is why i love them. Im sure others have different reasons.

You are saying this is shit based on the fact that Fredrik is doing a rythmic exercise and that to youre ears is not good guitar playing?

Please, feel free to post a good sounding guitar video and you will get my positive vote.

Thew...Only the guitarists sometimes use polyrythms. the drummer of Meshuggah is 44 baby all the way...

And yes Mindovermatter the riffs to me are brilliant. but then im not a pleeb either so.

If you read my comment properly you will notice I pointed out that I personally am not a fan of this kind of music and find it pretentious.. I merely stated that it is incredibly ignorant to proclaim this to be easy and simplistic just because you do not understand time signatures.

To call this a metallica rip off is also ridiculous, it sounds nothing at all like metallica and its pretty clear it is not trying to. They are doing something different which in a saturated music scene like today where so many bands sound identical is a breath of fresh air and something to be commended, even though I am not a fan. Some people like the sound of polyrhthms and the slightly jazzy feel they have got going on...i personally do not but I would not call them idiots for liking it. It is complex music and if your mind is stuck in 4/4 and you do not understand rhythms then you are not going to really get it. Does not make it amazing music, but it does not make it shit either, just different.

People with no theory knowledge rarely understand jazz either, it can sound to an untrained ear like random garbage but it is anything but random. Give your average guy the works of Shakespear and the Harry Potter series and if he has not been taught literature he will probably dismiss Shakespear as garbage and proclaim Harry Potter to be the pinicle of modern literature. When you are so used to listening to music in 4/4 and you hear something like this it is easy to dismiss it as crap but that does not make it so.

Show someone who has never listened to anything other than Britney Spears before some Maiden or Testament and they will probably say it is shit too and sounds like random noise. Its their loss.

^^

lol i understand time signatures just fine, i just have no respect for technical music that sounds like garbage. jazz sounds great, jazz is the hardest style of guitar that i`ve learned. jazz has melody and actually sounds good. this does not.

put aside the fact that you don`t like this, there`s lots of music that i don`t like but i can atleast admit if a riff atleast sounds decent. what im saying is not only do i not like this, but the riff are garbage so please answer my question. im not asking you if you are a fan of this or not. im asking you if you think these riffs sound like garbage. their are musicians who can can play at these crazy time signatures and actually sound good are their not???

clearly this guitar player spends 90 percent of his time on the minor pentatonic scale and i sincerly doubt he`s got enough class to learn other styles then his current one. he`s more concerned with the hair and tatoos then the music. hes got 1 dimension and he`s playing some slightly techinical but garbage sounding riffs. well wippity fuckin do da wippity fucking day. i GUARANTEE you this guy would never be able to play any soulful jazz music, its way out of his league. if this guy can play even half decent SOUNDING jazz then i will blow my fucking head off.

i say this is a metallica WANNABE not a ripoff because this is the kind of riffing that they can do but actually make sound good. and this guy looks like hes a metallica fan. this guy spent more time on his hair and not enough time actually practicing. i hate it when people wanna act like rock stars but not actually put the work in.

i guess my main point here is that just because theres a strong technical aspect to something doesnt mean its good or needs to be respected. creativity is much more important. shakespeare was a creative writer not just a technical one so I don`t really see your point with that example.

im not completely missing your point here. and thanks for continuing the discussion with me. im not trying to be an asshole or just fight with you for the sake of it. i respect your intelligence. peace.

edit..

i realise no one is agreeing with my at all lol so i give up, i said my peace.

Sorry but it sounds to me like you do not know what you are talking about. Minor pentatonic scale? Do you know what those words mean? There is no pentatonic usage in this video at all and I think you would be hard pushed to find anything on this guy using pentatonics.

You say he has not got enough class to learn other styles? He had enough class to create an entire new genre of metal with his other band Meshuggah, he also plays acoustic guitar and is a very good lead player. Want to hear something `soulfull` and classy by him then check out the solo to this song here
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOd-T58qHLA

It starts at 2mins 40 in, it is beautifuly simple and very powerfull, taking into account he is also playing this over a dubious rhythm that is no simple feat. Or what about this one?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rj2M7nHx60
Solo starts at 2 mins 7 in, again very very soulful.
He does not have just `1 dimension` as you ridiculously claim, judging his entire guitar playing career on one small video and making blanket statments about him is very fucking stupid. He is a pretty decent shredder too but very rarely shows it, nice sweeping chops.

You also perplexingly claim that he is clearly more concerned with his hair and tattos than his music and state that he spends more time on his hair and not enough practicing...He has NO tattoos and has straggly long hair, what the hell are you talking about? What do you think he does with his hair exactly that takes up so much time? Not cut it? To play with the timings and rhythms he does as tightly as this requires a monumental amount of practice. Also how is he acting like a rockstar? If anything I would say he is not doing it enough, no headbanging or moving around just concentrating on what he is playing. Nor is he wearing `rockstar` clothing, just a simple black t shirt... For a guy claiming to be trying not to be an asshole fighting for the sake of it you are throwing alot of completely baseless ridiculous insults at him....

I agree with you that creativity is much more important than technicallity but I think having the skills to be technical alows you to do more things and thus potentially be more creative. Meshuggah when they came out sounded like no other band and have since gained a huge following, listen to this song (funny video too hah)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4A_tSyJBsRQ

That sounds completely different to anything that came before them, that right there shows creativity. It is certainly not only technicalness, the crazy timing is I think what makes that song so cool. Again I am not really a massive fan, but I appreciate the talent behind it and can understand why so manly people love them.

As to the Metallica point I really do not know what else to say to you...if he wanted to sound like Metallica he would use a 6 sting guitar, play in e and make thrash riffs in 4/4 the whole time like many bands have done. Instead he spends most of his time playing with an 8 string with disjointed time signatures and certainly NOT thrash riffs. If you honestly think this guy tries to sound like metallica then to quote yourself you need to `clean your fuckin ears out` and `you need to stop commenting on videos and ask your doctor if paxil is right for you.` This guy goes out of his way to make non traditional sounding music and started up the whole `math metal` thing. Oh and for the record there is no way in hell Metallica could play half the songs he has written, and I sincerely doubt you could either.

Basically, no to my ears this does not sound great, I am not really a fan of odd time signatures, however to those who do enjoy listening to things that sound really off base and are comfortable with the headfuck it creates trying to figure out what they are doing I can see why they would like it. I also appreciate the tightness of the players, and their creativity in making something that sounds so different and will only really appeal to a very small group (probably 90% musicians), that says a great deal about their integrity. Both players are skillfull enough to easily copy any big metal band out there and probably sell more records that way, however they wanted to make something experimental and different even though they knew that it would only appeal to a very select few. The Shakespear analogy was reffering to the fact that this music is pretty much music for musicians, non musicians are unlikely to `get it` and enjoy it, the average person is likely (as you did) to say what the fuck is this? On the same hand Shakespear is difficult to appreciate unless you have studied literature, show a young child Hamlet and they will probably have a similar reaction.

As a final point I think its pretty telling that in your first comment you said the playing is equivilent to one month of practice, then after I pointed out that this is actually a very technically demanding piece due to the rhythms (as any musician should have been able tell) you start saying you have no respect for it because it is `technical music that sounds like garbage`.... whilst in the same sentence claiming to understand about time signatures. I really do not think you have any idea what you are talking about.

ChrissyChiChi, I have rarelly seen your level of articulate on the internet or anywhere else for that matter. I salute you for putting in words what I could only dream of.
I agree with you on all poins. (except with not being a fan :P).

Anyone who wants to check out a more better take on the guitarist playing should check out the whole Sol niger withing album, its mind blowing stuff and changes though the whole album.
