The Coolest Picture of Earth

Taken from Voyager 1 at the end of our solar system 4 billion miles away in 1990. Earth is that little white speck apparently.

The cool thing is the radioactive material that powers this thing still has enough juice in it for the next at least the next 16 years. Hopefully what`s left of the rest of the instrumentation will be able to hold out for that long.

Hey The Living End...if there`s still enough "juice" for that thing to stay powered for the next 16 years, why don`t scientist or whoever use that "juice" to power the houses and electrical appliances on earth?

@ SoN oF Da PI

Because it`s radioactive and doesn`t produce that much power.

^^ Specificlly, it uses radioactive decay in a thermopile to generate energy. The downfall here is the half-life decays with the stated output. While Voyager still has power, it is roughly 15-20% of the output it had at launch in 1977. In the late 90`s we started shutting down sub-systems to keep her on-line. We would love to give her a change of batteries but lets face it, at 110AU (thats ~17 billion km or 1,430,000 trips around the eq. of Earth) a service call is out of the question.
