BBC Horizon - How to Kill a Human Being ...

Former Conservative MP, Michael Portillo pushes his body to the brink of death in an investigation into the science of execution. As the American Supreme Court examines whether the lethal injection is causing prisoners to die in unnecessary pain Michael sets out to find a solution which is fundamentally humane. To do so he examines the key methods of execution available today: he discovers why convicts can catch on fire in the electric chair, learns how easy it is to botch a hanging and inhales a noxious gas to experience first hand the terror of the gas chamber.

I`ve seen this documentary last year on the television, but it was so good that I watched it again here. They definitely need more funding for more investigations. I like this crew.

The best thing would have to be a neutral death. I can see how people would object to how someone would feel a pleasant death after doing a horrible crime if this proposed method is used.

I currently live in Norway where street police do not carry guns, number of guns per person is extremely low, and death penalty is not carried out. Crime rate is extremely low.

I kinda like this extra from the sicko movie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4L6-0WRfSA

I love how the pro-death penalty guy is a complete tool. He basicly said that he wants to torture the defendant before they die. And what no one mentions is the family of the defendant. Sometimes I really dislike living in the U.S. BRB Big brother is knocking on my door.

Just reintroduce the guillotine. "Painless," with justice attached to it.

I think spiked users will be spilts on this subtject by a much higher margin than usual(lets say for/against religion on this one)
Vote up if you are in favour for painless.
Vote down if you are in favour for non-painless.
Do not vote if you are in favour of abolishment of killing of prisoners(i`m on this side, but its not about us atm)

@pro420
So what you`re saying is that the family of a criminal that killed so many people in such a gruesome manner that he was sentenced to death deserve a better consolation than the families whose members have died horrible deaths? Wouldn`t it be more easy to lie to the family and go on ahead with same method he used on his victims? I`m not comforted at all by the thought that a guy who used to rape and murder little 5 year olds on a regular basis is gonna die with a smile on his face. That kinda defeats the whole point of the JUSTICE system don`t you think?

This whole documentary fails to put upfront the main cause why death by the state exists. It`s as if they`re searching for the most efficient and humane euthanasia method available rather than the most just execution method. I mean killing a person painlessly could easily be done with a shot to the brain or various medical procedures (induced paralysis etc). Nazis tried to be humane in their extermination yet they couldn`t waste that amount of bullets to achieve it so they opted for the cheapest and most humane method they could conceive. Is this what this documentary`s trying to present? A cheaper and more humane method to euthanize innocent people?

Again, we`re talking about murderers here, people who wouldn`t think twice to slice your throat if given the chance. This is all bullshit, people. Killing is not JUST a simple human act, it`s something deranged, it`s not right to look into perfect killing methods just for the sake of it. Don`t trivialize it with your idiotic, hypocritical sense of ethics. Each of us enjoys killing as much as the next person and I`m speaking for all of us when I say we like it as gruesome and fair as it can be and denying this is denying your nature as a human being because when you stop feeling anything in any experience implying death/murder you`re no better than the guy they strap up in the electric chair.

Vizreel, did you even watch this video? Half the stuff you suggested was addressed in this video. Each of us enjoys killing? Sounds like your talking from personal experience there. Your perspective of things is... alarming to say the least. And yes, this documentary is about finding a more humane way of executing people guilty of a crime that warrants such a penalty and is cost effective.

@ AllMac:

Did you miss the part about how decapitation is not ok? Neither is it humane, because there is still oxygen in the brain. It is estimated that people who are decapitated remain conscious for up to 7 minutes after the fact.
