Avro Arrow

The Avro Canada CF-105 Arrow was a delta-winged interceptor aircraft, designed and built by Avro Aircraft Limited in Canada. Not long after the 1958 start of its flight test program, the development of the Arrow was abruptly and controversially halted, sparking a long and bitter political debate.

And for people who think it`s nothing, well think that the world plane fleet was still made with planes with the propeller in front.

And we came out with that fucker that can go up to Mach 2...

I don`t think it`s nothing, it just wasn`t practical

had a range of about 400 miles and couldn`t maneuver worth a piss

and don`t get me started on the cost

in all seriousness though it was an incredible plane for the time

CF-105 Arrow: 360 NM (410 mi, 660 km)
F-16 : 340 mi (295 nm, 550 km)

And they built 5 prototypes, the first of its kind...
In 1950s where are you gonna find jet engine? U gonna call Boeing, Roll royce, Lockheed Martin?? They had to built it from scratch...

I appreciate your interest regarding fighter jets.

The f-16 has a 340 mile combat radius when it`s status is CAT III. Or weighed the hell down with over 6 thousand pounds of bombs, not including missiles. That`s excluding the extra fuel tank it carries (total max takeoff weight around 40k, the arrow was over 65k lbs). The f-16 is much more effective as an air-to-air fighter. I can`t say for sure it`s effective combat range in air-to-air fighting but it`s much farther. Not to mention it`s much smaller and way more maneuverable than the arrow.

Anyway it was developed about 20 years after the arrow. I would never really compare the two.

I think the arrow is a badass plane. Like I said before, it was just impracticle especially for the time period.

::edit:: Yes the Orenda Iroquois was an awesome engine but they definately could have used someone elses since there were plenty of jet engine manufacturers at the time.

Its kinda creepy whenever you find out the military has delayed technological advances. Its like they`re saying "Not yet, not yet..." like its all planed out.

I still wonder what Canada would`ve been like if this made it through. Although an elephant compared to the agile jets of today, this was quite a plane.

just keep in mind, when avro Canada went under from the loss of the arrow there, the engineers that worked on it went to NASA and got the Americans to the moon with the help of the germans from project paperclip.

Ah yes, Canada got us to the moon... C`mon eh.

I love how every historical achievement attributed to the US is always "reclaimed" by another country that doesn`t get credit for it.

The light bulb, the car, the computer, the pet rock. Ok Canada, you can have the pet rock.

The reason why it was shunted was because our fearless leader at the time, Prime Minister Diefenbaker, made a deal with the United States to shut down the program in exchange for a few cruise missiles - missiles that didn`t work; missiles that we had no use for since NATO and NORAD were founded.

^^Scuba wasn`t saying Canadians got us to the moon, or was trying to belittle the American achievement of getting humanity there. He is just saying that a lot of smart people from the Avro Arrow project went on to bigger and better things. Things that altered the course of history. He is trying to point out that yes, Canadians are able to achieve very lofty goals.

Wow Canada built something cool. NOT!... Fail.
"Biter debate" Why should we build our own aircraft when we can just have the Americans build one for us. Then we can eat the fruits of their labor. "End of debate"

However, I do concede that the Americans / Chinese... gave us the Snuggie.
If you read your history, at the time Canada was on the forefront of military jet technology. It took 20 years for the Americans to build a worthy counterpart, the F-16.
We started the designs of the Avro Arrow in 1953. It`s first flight was in 1958. Cancelled a year later. Capable of 1,307 mph, 2,104 km/h) at 50,000 ft (15,000 m).
The F-16`s first flight was 2 February 1978, and used by the military in 17 August 1978. Speed of 1,500 mph, 2,414 km/h at 60,000 feet.
20 years difference, nearly the same specifications.
A large amount of the Avro engineers that worked on the arrow helped the Americans with their future aircraft, the F-14 and the F-16 most noteably.

So what else did Canada not give to the world my fat American testtube baby friend?
Ignorance is bliss
