BBC Horizon - The Hawking Paradox 1/2

Part 2
Stephen Hawking is the most famous scientist on the planet. His popular science book `A Brief History of Time` was a publishing sensation, staying at the top of the bestseller lists longer than any other book in recent history. But behind the public face lies an argument that has been raging for almost 30 years.
Hawking shot to fame in the world of physics when he provided a mathematical proof for the Big Bang theory. This theory showed that the entire universe exploded from a singularity, an infinitely small point with infinite density and infinite gravity. Hawking was able to come to his proof using mathematical techniques that had been developed by Roger Penrose. These techniques were however developed to deal not with the beginning of the Universe but with black holes.

Anyone giggled a lil bit in his mouth when they showed the Hawk cruising in the park in that magical chair and the dramatic music? Or when they flashed some green shit on his face ?

7:20 Wrong.. radiation can get out. We sometimes pick up gamma and X rays that have come from blackholes.

I remeber watching this a while back.. It was a good thing of Hawking to admit that he was wrong after 30 years.. Must have been such a dissapointment for him.

^no radiation cannot get out. Gamma and X rays are just light with a different frequency and they can`t get out. If they`re picked up they must come from somewhere else, not inside a black hole.

^Hawkings theory was accepted by mainstream science as true and eventually overturned and proven wrong by one persistant man, its funny how so many people will accept a theory as true without even truely understanding it.

It makes me think of all the fools who so strongly grasp onto and defend the primitive evolution theory that will one day also be proven false.

^ way to miss the point. This great "mistake" has an obvious parallel with Einstein`s great "mistake". True scientists HAVE to address their own spiritual side "scientific heresy", albeit in a scientific manner.
It`s a beautifull conceit, and is as wrong as it is right. It`s the colour of magic.

Large minds becoming small within their own reality.

Stay aware ... your imagination is to probe, not to define.

Interestingly, Wikipedia says "X-ray RADIATION" is emited from the heat of blackholes and this is how we detect them.

But Wikipedia says twice beforehand that "NO RADIATION" comes from black holes.

So Wikipedia contradicts itself currently as of 2009/03/28 7:18 EST.

In one "sunny orange" photograph you can apparently see something emited from a black hole. Shows up as a nipple.

I did see one programme that said both visible light and non-visible light is emitted from black holes as a "jet stream effect". Maybe there are different types of black holes.

But I`m sure if you internet surf around you will find people who believe that visible light comes out of some or all black holes from the center. Although this "Jet Stream" maybe small and therefore not readily seen to the human eye.

Are there different types of blackholes? Why should we think that there are only one type?

the way i learned it is that the accretion disk/sphere/w/e is the source of all that super hot radiation. light can escape that, including xrays. technically, the radiation is not coming from the black hole`s point of no return, but out the outskirt where gravity has still not collapsed fully on itself, which understandably, would be super hot.

as far as i know, light doesn`t escape black holes from this side of reality. only place it is theorized to go would be a white hole, and the only one we think there has been would be the beginning of our universe with the big bang.

oooooh, and totally off topic, but the hawkings also theorizes that black holes can slowly decay over time with matter being created and destroyed within the black hole, but at a rate that exceeds the age of our universe at present...
