If you spoke it fluently why would you sit there for a minute trying to understand them? I don`t sit there for a minute trying to understand whether or not they are speaking English, German, French or Italian which I speak fluently.

^Because when you`re bilingual it takes, atleast for me to a few seconds to switch between english and russian, plus Polish and Russian are related so it sounds familiar yet different. English, German, French and Italian are related and have the same common ancestor, Latin? Russian and English share no similarities.
