Well, I founded the First Church of Murphadology. There is a God, it is a Him, and he`s an asshole. He has One Commandment: what can go wrong, will.

But Pat might convince me to convert.

Piece.

Even as evil as I am, I would never abolish the innate privilege of free speech and expression.

@ flynn:

if i was a dictator, i would (of course) abolish free speech.. BUT!... I would find something to distract the population, something like reality tv, or a political scandal, or something... so that people wouldn`t notice.

i seriously believe i`m evil-er than you, dude. I`m talking public beheadings for corrupted politicians, eye-for-an-eye, and things of the sort.

i should run for president...

Although I fully support freedom of speech, one has to view it as a double edged sword. On one hand it allows us to express anything we wish to but on the other it can have serious consequences if abused. The racist, homophobic, ignorant fanatics he is referring to might have the right to go out in public and express their opinions on the society they live in, but at the same time those people will go home to their family and teach their children these things as well. Sure, they have a right to do this, but a child doesn`t have any say in the matter.

I dunno, maybe I`m being unfair but I honestly feel like some people out there spewing hatred shouldn`t be allowed to preach their bullshit to the susceptible.

^^ @ 1og0s: Be carefull. This is not an issue of the merits of free speech. It is an issue of biased international political agendas, opportunistically coopting vulnerable national anti-hate laws, in a dangerous attempt to take power. It is absolutely critical that we who advocate free speech, stand fully united and strong at this time. We are under attack. Now is the time to stay our doubts, and point our double edged blades all outwards. Let us bleed the fanatics of their poisons.

You said "I dunno, maybe I`m being unfair but I honestly feel like some people out there spewing hatred shouldn`t be allowed to preach their bullshit to the susceptible."

Yes freedom of speech is a double edged sword. On one side lies tyranny, on the other liberty. On which side would you have our life blood pool, since blood cannot pool on a blade?.

It is an impossible ballance to sensibly define and limit the restrictions on speech itself. How can you fairly seperate honest but painfull dialogue from honest but hatefull calls? Can we prevent the creeping spread of what is ruled to be wrong speech, so that limits on speech are not wielded as a weapon to silence innocents, on behalf of self interested parties, for advantage and not fairness or safety? By allowing speech to be limited directly, in and of itself, we enter a most perilous position, which is well proven by history to be much more prone to abuse than honest humane success.

We have another, pre-existing, and less perilous test: it is a crime to CONSPIRE, INCITE, or FACILITATE the commission of existing crimes. Murder, torture, assault, harrassment, theft, fraud, etc.. These are indisputably worthy of being criminal acts, and to conspire, incite, or facilitate them them is likewise sensibly criminal. The careful application of conspiracy, incitement, or facilitation charges is the honest and true test of the point when speech has turned from free (if smelly) hot air, into a dangerous component of a true crime.

It is very difficult to prove conspiracy, incitement, or facilitation, and that is good. But it would be effort better spent for us to develope the political will and legal precedents we need to demonstrate that some kinds of speech are historically proven components of real crimes. Let us prove that advocating intolerance to the death, is a demonstrated incitement to murder and violence, and let all those who do it be held to account equally. This is a more solid approach than contemplating flawed and biased suggestions for this and that "hate speech" to be somehow unilaterally banned. It rests on something closer to the proof and causality of real crimes, instead of blanket assertions and overgeneralised protections that are so malleable to bias.

Pat Condell is often criticised as hatefull, and he is a great example of how someone can be honestly angry to the point of appearing and sounding hatefull, while advocating only lawfull and peacefull measures. He could clearly not be convicted of conspiracy, incitement, or facilitation on the merits of his words. Some of the fanatics he rails against would not fair so well, when they call for murder and violent unrest, and this indeed often comes to pass.

I find it astonishing that so many real examples of these very real crimes of conspiracy, encitement, and facilitation, go unpunished by our own courts. Especially in the case of bounties being placed on people who are then threatened or killed.

I agree with Pat that our politics and religions are becoming perverse and corrupt on this topic. It is a classic struggle of history that We The People must force these institutions to reflect our humane will. The fight is on.

Now is the time to rally behind free speech, and I appreciate Pat`s idea that it is worthy of our "religious worship". We might as well claim the same rights as those who would unjustly gag us, and it`s honestly not an unrealistic position that this belief is a central spiritual foundation for many of us.

Please forgive my preaching. I only hope to strenghten and arm the flock with my turn at the pulpit.
