I would love to do some thing like that in a Faraday suit.

Is the electric field making the fluorescent tube follow along with the song?

Can you please explain why that is happening?

the gas in the fluorescent tube becomes charged by the electricity which causes the molecules within it to become illuminated, this would not occur with a normal light bulb because it would need a direct current

That is because the gases contained inside the fluorescent tube glow when it is statically charged. Normally, the tube lights up when one side is positively charged (from the power net) and the other side is negatively charged (back to the power net).

In this video though, the immense voltage of the Tesla coil is enough to travel through to the air, through the Faraday suit, through the air again and charge one side of the tube positively, while the other side is negatively charged because it is connected to the power net. This causes the gas to glow.

Hell, why did I just explain that?

That is equally the nerdiest and the coolest thing I`ve ever seen on the internet.

I have seen a tesla coil playing a tune in a vid before, from memory they pulse the arc at specific hz/khz to obtain the note.

@ Sideshow: A Faraday cage or Faraday shield (or in the case a Faraday Suit) is a mesh enclosure formed by conducting material(like steel or copper).
*In a nut shell: It`s metal stuff that keeps his ass from being cooked like a christmas ham.*

From Wikipedia:
This enclosure blocks out external static electrical fields (or in this case the electrical discharge from the coil). Faraday cages are named after physicist Michael Faraday, who built one in 1836.

An external static electrical field will cause the electrical charges within the conducting material to redistribute themselves so as to cancel the field`s effects in the cage`s interior. This effect is used, for example, to protect electronic equipment from lightning strikes and other electrostatic discharges.

A Tesla coil creates a high-voltage high-frequency electric field in its` vicinity. Lights that work via high-voltage excitation will react with this field. Examples are neon tubes, fluorescent tubes, black-light tubes, etc.

I wonder if this odd effect is what led Nikola Tesla to begin researching and developing wireless power transmission.
