IMF loans are the perfect tool for controlling other countries. It`s perfect precisely because it sounds so stupid.

To get one of those loans you have to submit to a WHOLE whack of demands the US puts on your country. Mostly we hear about the nice sounding stuff like free elections, free press etc.

But we don`t really enforce that. What we have are a bunch of little legal clauses that effectively give the US veto power over their policy and political decisions.

And if they default on payments than the US pretty much gets free reign to do whatever they want to their economy. Much like how Hungary is being forced to raise taxes in the middle of an economic crisis. Sure it`ll permanently crash their economy but it will make the US more coin and make Hungary (a former soviet sattelite) permanently in debt to the US. Then the US can make deals like forcing them to accept their missile defence system in exchange for cutting their loan down.

That`s why the IMF is so powerful. It`s basically extortion.
