Compact Disc Turns 30! Happy Belated Bir...

For humans, 30 isn’t too old — not even middle age these days; but for technology, any age measured in decades denotes something downright ancient. Enter the CD, first demonstrated on March 8, 1979.

To date, over 3.5 billion audio CD players have been sold along with 240 billion Compact Discs. Sales are in steep decline, however, as the age of physical delivery systems for music ends, with the MP3 now king.

The CD hasn’t nearly the passionate fanbase of Vinyl records or even cassettes, an probably never will, but many music fans, when blowing out the candles on the CD, will continue to lament the demise of cover art and the idea of the album as a cohesive artistic statement.

^Never have actually... they were always gifted to me until I found napster and minidiscs in middle school.

Anyways, Bruce Springsteen needs some recognition for jumping onto new technology throughout his career. I think Born in the USA was the first album to release on CD and apparently he released a song through guitar hero now too?

I do enjoy the convenience of downloading my tunes, but I really like the physical packaging; especially the smell (sounds weird I know) of the ink and paper on quality printings of album artwork and what not.

Last discs I bought were impossible to find online, so i had to special order them. 3 of them for about 45 dollars.

Anything mainstream can usually be easily found on the interbutts, but for those rare artists, or ones from another country I usually have to pay.

Some classical music cannot be found as an mp3 for download, that and opera...but I haven`t bought a `popular` music cd since the late 90`s

Its funny because the disc technology its self is older. This is more of a nod to the unified standard of the technology.

now i feel old, my first music cd was that siamese twins one from smashing pumpkins along with dookie by greenday. i actually never bought that many cds, napster came out soon after. i did buy a few that were like mixed techno albums that i couldn`t find on napster, then i discovered torrents and irc, and streaming radio where i could just use a desktop audio recorder. even then burned cd`s were on the way out because mp3 players debuted in high school. now there`s like no cd player section at best buy anymore i think

I still love CDs, and am a proud owner of a CD tower full of collections. It`s a great convo starter whenever I bring a girl over...which is actually never. BUT THE POINT REMAINS.

Last album I bought was Anti-Flag`s The Terror State. While I had downloaded the entire album, I believe in fully supporting your favorite bands. Even if you download an album, support the talent to ensure that they`ll keep making the soundtracks to your lives.

Bought an R.E.M. CD yesterday :)
I enjoy having hard copies of my favorite albums instead of just files on my computer.

I can`t believe its been 30 years, though :O
