For those that don`t know, that was a controlled burn. It is done for many reasons:
1) a lot of Florida`s flora depend on occasional wildfires to unlock nutrients locked up dead plant matter
2) invasive plant species cannot survive the wild fires, while native plants are well adapted to them
3) doing a controlled burn reduces the fuel load in the brush (dead plants, dry leaves, etc) so when a real unplanned fire strikes, it doesn`t turn into a California monstrosity.

The tree bark on a lot of trees is layered and only the very surface will burn (try lighting a phone book on fire and see how far you get). Also, there is a special grass, I think it`s called needle or wire grass, whose seeds do not germinate until scortched by fire.

For those who care, my best guess is this was filmed at Weedon Island (St. Petersburg), which before becoming a park, was once a film studio, and even one of the first airports in the world. The compacted ground couldn`t support vegetation until the turtles started digging and loosening the dirt, reviving the entire island!!!
