The Fall of Saigon (1975)

The last days of the South Vietnam nation. Saigon falls and dramatic footage captures the chaos and desperation. "The Vietnam War, also known as the Second Indochina War, occurred in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia from 1959 to April 30, 1975. The war was fought between the communist North Vietnam, supported by its communist allies, and the government of South Vietnam, supported by the United States and other member nations of the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO). In April 1975, North Vietnam captured Saigon. North and South Vietnam were reunified the following year. The war exacted a huge human cost in terms of fatalities, including 3 to 4 million Vietnamese from both sides, 1.5 to 2 million Laotians and Cambodians, and 58,159 U.S. soldiers."

Military the U.S couldve won but it wouldnt have done any good if it was losing support at home and abroad. Just like the french with Algeria. The french crushed the FLN guerilla party down to its last members but eventually they lost because they had no support from paris and france as a whole.

I will not lie. As much as I do not support Communism. The Vietnamese have fought hard to earn their freedom after thousands of years of control by countries like China and France. Being afraid of the Domino Effect or not, the US should never have intervened.

I`m a proud American citizen and even prouder of this country`s heritage, histories, and the struggles for freedom. Officially became a citizen, when my Vietnamese mother took many classes to earn her citizenship rights. That was roughly when I was in 9th grade, although I have lived in California since I was 3 or 4. We came here when my mother wanted to search for her father whom had came over under the protection of the Americans. Being that he was a high ranking general fighting for the South.

As proud as I am with the country whom I adopted as my home. I can`t shake the feeling of being proud for the Vietnamese people whom have fought for over a thousand year to finally reunify Vietnam under their own laws and rule. There are less pages than you can count fingers on one hand about the history of Vietnam in world history books. Unless you turn to the pages about France or China`s history about ruling Vietnam, or even the US history pages on the Vietnam War. For a bunch of people who fight in trees and caves. You have to admit, it`s pretty damn impressive to see a nation who barely have a whole country to call home to beat a giant like the United States.

The last time I came back was when I was 13. The country was beautiful when we were flying over it. But as soon as we landed, I saw how corrupted and dirty, and crowded it really was. I had a widely bad impression of the country and people as a whole. From what I understand though, in the past decade alone they have started to become more modern. More use of technology, more jobs created, and the people as a whole are just happier.

"Military the U.S couldve won but it wouldnt have done any good if it was losing support at home and abroad."

Yeah, right...and risk the wrath of the Chinese Army? Remember what the Red Army did during the Korean War? The U.S. didn`t want a repeat of that.

I`m with Silverest on this one. The Communists provided the ONLY alternative for Vietnamese people living under brutal foreign oppression. It was either that, or even more of the same under the puppet government(s) that the US kept reinstaling/couping. I just took a Vietnam War class with a professor O`Connell (very famous in the UC circuit). Its kinda sad, because of budget cuts, this is the last Vietnam War class he`ll be teaching.

Anyways, you guys have no idea how much Ho Chi Minh idolized the U.S. The Vietnamese Declaration of Independence was modeled almost VERBATIM to the US Declaration of Independence. He thought that if anyone understood the tyranny of oppression, it would be the US. Oh how wrong he was.

I`m proud of my countrymen though (although not proud of their actions...too much torture/antipathy/anti-capitalist resentment). We are the only--repeat ONLY--country to have ever defeated the US militarilly. Ever. Score one for the little guy.

Also sidenote: For Viets April 30th is known as "Black April" and we commemorate it every year. Mostly its just anti-communist bashing...which gets real old, real fast. For us Viets who know their shit (i.e. with actual brains) its really frustrating to get over that hump.

^^ya you viets with brains can tell us about the senseless slaughter of your enemies following 1975. and the kind and heartfelt treatment of your prisoners of war during that confrontation. also the murders of civilian targets throughout the area for not following communist dictates? you know how it was all one sided against your poor communist brothers.

^They may not have treated their POW`s like guests in a 5 star hotel... but at least they kept them alive. The 20th century is chock full of genocide: Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, Bangladesh, Guatemala... the list goes on and on... Dozens of genocides that could have set the precedent for the Viet Cong, but they took a relatively high road and we have to hold at least some respect for that. They were, in fact, fighting to save their own country.

You guys pulled out, couldn`t take the psychological war anymore. Yeah, you could`ve dropped a nuke...but really? That`s on you to explain YOUR argument instead of just lol-ing it out like the idiot retard you probably are.

Motrhed3: Umm...Vietnam also kicked the Khmer Rouge from power in Cambodia. You know, the genocidal UNITED STATES SUPPORTED AND ALSO COMMUNIST regime that murdered 3 MILLION of their own people? Oh yeah...real senseless.

But I take it you are pertaining to the post-war prisoners of war. My FATHER was one. They treated the average grunt not great, but serviceable (come on, its a post-war ravaged country). It was the higher-ups that got it the worst (but in every war, they always do).

Oh yeah, Motrhed3, I forgot to add: My Lai massacre. The United States are such saints aren`t they? Murder AND Rape?! Wow...you know some ppl would just prefer death, but you threw in RAPE as well. So kind of you guys.

And before you go off on the "isolate incident" defense, read some books. Shit like this happened all the time. Indiscriminate killing of the civilians is what bolstered VC support. You Americans created more VC than the VC could recruit by themselves!

The US got involved in the Vietnam War on a false premise. This is what I was taught by a caucasian teacher. In fact, he introduced to his students this nifty book called, "Lies my teachers taught me." The book goes on to correct such popularity beliefs such as how Christopher Columbus supposedly discovered America. The real credit actually went to Amerigo Vespucci, hence it was named after him.

To correct Led Zeppelin on his comment. The Vietnamese in fact did defeated the US military. They did it by unconventional means. It was the 20th century, let`s not forget. Many struggles have been fought in many different ways. Such as that of Mahandas Ghandi whom led the non-violence protest. People like Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, Cesar Chavez, and more. The Vietnamese pretty much used the media as their weapon of choice. Broadcasting violent footages that reached the US shores and almost immediately made the war unpopular. Let`s not forget, they went into the war with the full support of congress. Only to end up having its citizen later realizing that they didn`t belong in there in the first place. The war in Iraq is popularly compared to the Vietnam War. It was said to be a repeat of Vietnam all over again. Walking into a war on false premise, only to lose it on unpopularity at home and world wide.

To mortrhed3. I wouldn`t called them my communist brothers. I just applaud them for what they have achieved. And it was never one sided. There are two sides to a page. I`m not sure if you know your American history right, but the south vietnamese did fought the north vietnamese with assistance from the Americans. Whom, like mentioned above, intentionally intervened in the conflict on false premise with full support of congress.

To add onto the examples of the use of media as modern day weapons. Take a look at MSNBC, CNN, and FOX (FAUX) News even. The media is a tool used for propaganda and other things. Nowadays you can`t even launch a test rocket without the world knowing first hand and putting your ass on trade blockades and embargo. i.e North Korea. Sure you can nuke the entire world, but what good would it do for any country? Every country needs the next country just as much as they need you. It`s almost like a world wide check and balance. If there`s a more powerful and effective weapon out there than the media, you let me know.
