This is a fantastic photo. The only problem is, I keep thinking they look like they`re about to announce the next elimination challenge :(

^lol

From what I heard a while ago, women used to put white makeup on and painted their teeth black because that way they would stand out in a typical dark Japanese house.

^ I`m not sure about the teeth thing, but the face paint I believe was to suggest prosperity and wealth - it`s the same in most North Asian cultures.
Pale = inside = wealthy.
Tanned = outside = poor.
I dunno about China et al, but still in Japan you see women walking around with parasols and elbow-length gloves, and commercials advertising `whitening` chemicals that somehow bleach the pigment from your skin (scary stuff ... ).

Interesting concept though. But traditional Japanese houses would have been no darker - in fact, my experience suggests they would in fact be brighter - than European houses.

Japanese houses were designed with openness as a central theme - meant they had absolutely terrible insulation and were hugely vulnerable to typhoons and earthquakes, but it helped to get the air moving in the absolutely horrible humid summers here. Once you`ve been through a few Osaka summers you really don`t give a shit about typhoons anymore.
