Little David - 914 mm Mortar

Little David was the nickname of an American 36 inch (914 mm) caliber mortar used for test firing bombs during World War II. Towards the end of the war it was modified to serve as a siege mortar, as it was expected that the US forces would encounter extremely strong fortifications during the invasion of Japan. The invasion became unnecessary when Japan surrendered and Little David was never used in combat.

That thing is huge. I can`t believe they just tip the barrel up and let the shell slide down to load it. That doesn`t seem like a very good idea...

Anyone else notice how incredibly informative older documentaries were than the television programming you see today?

@Zytemis

This isn`t a documentary. This is US Army film used to promote the weapon withing the services. Hence the talk about where further information can be found.

This "weapon" was as useful as the giant railway guns the Germans built... in other words not at all. Far too susciptble to air attack, and far too slow moving/firing to be any real use.

A squadron of B-17`s had more mobility, firepower and self protection, and probably not much worse accuracy!

If they were going to use it to attack Japan, why not just use Battleships instead?

^^ and even if it wasn`t, you can intentionally beach a battleship and then you`ve got a stationary coastal battery that`s bloody hard to destroy.

reminds me of the first chapter of Jules Verne`s book "From the earth to the moon".
Where this gun club keeps building bigger and bigger guns, when the war is over the use this super cannon to shoot someone to the moon.
