Neil deGrasse Tyson: Bush's War on Scien...

Neil deGrasse Tyson defends government support for U.S. science research under President George W. Bush, and says that, contrary to popular belief, "funding for science under Republican administrations has been historically higher than under Democrats." Neil deGrasse Tyson, the bestselling author and director of the world-famous Hayden Planetarium, chronicles America's irrational love affair with Pluto, man's best celestial friend.

^^I think he`s just stating the facts that by whatever circumstances, science institutions have received more funding from the national government during Republican administrations.

Now, maybe Democratic administrations should stress the point that they will invest more in science than there partisan counterparts.

I would bet that you thought otherwise and assumed that science investment has always been higher in Democratic administrations. It is really surprising that he believes it is the opposite. I don`t believe he is particularly biased, just informed.

^ Indeed, it`s not a matter of belief. Obama`s people are already going after the NASA budget. Anyone who was paying attention knows that the Carter and Clinton years were not good ones for public funding of science research. The Reagan years, on the other hand, were awesome.

That said, given other viewpoints expressed by Degrasse, I`m willing to bet that he is a Democrat.

old article but a good one on stem cell research:
http://www.genengnews.com/articles/chitem.aspx?aid=2061&chid=0

Basically the private sector is where these advances in science get their funding. The fact is that embryonic stem cell research has thus far failed with its promise. Funding isn`t the issue, there is plenty of it (see link), Bush allowed current projects to continue (prior to 2001), but forbid further funding (the christian right got him there, he just held to his convictions). Adult stem cell therapies already exist, particularly bone marrow transplants that are used to treat leukemia.

I`m not sitting here and defending Bush, but deGrasse is absolutely right. People tend to cherry pick the talking points and immediately spout their ignorance. Behind every mass media story or some knucklehead spouting b.s. on tv, there`s usually many facts that are missing.

^ It must be because I am Canadian, but I have never once heard any one try to argue the opposite anyway. This is the second time this has been uploaded, and no one seems to be surprised this time around either.

The only arguments I hear about Republican funding of science, is where the money is going.

Best thing about Neil is his enthusiastic Energy for anything and everything.
