Adam Carolla on Atheism

Inspired by extremist Shirley Phelps, Adam Carolla goes on a rant during his radio show about some of the reasons he is an atheist. A genius rant at that.

^ I haven`t had any divine interventions so what makes you more special than me. I guess your imaginary god likes you more than me.

edit: btw when a god comes down and tells me he exists to my face, then I`ll believe in divine intervention.

alifeva1 yet another extremely silly comment, that really makes very little sense. I take it you never studied much history, but if you did you would be aware that for thousands of years people have been claiming they have experienced divine intervention from their various gods. The Greeks constantly talked about having visions and interventions from Hephaestus, Hermes,Poseidon etc.The same goes to Pagans, Hindus and just about every other religion out there. What is your opinion of that? You are an athiest to those gods so presumably you think they were deluded, which is exactly what anyone with half a brain would think about your `divine interventions` also. Do you think your God dressed up like Possidon just to fuck with Greek sailors? Or were all those millions of people being foolish but only you and people who believe in the Christian god are experiencing the real thing?

As to your stories lets look at them logically shall we. God was perfectly happy to let the genocide in darfur go ahead, for innocent women and children to be mercilessly raped and torchered, set on fire and butchered with machettes. He was willing to let that go ahead without taking action, yet he sees you trip over a pot hole when running from the police and thinks `AHA! This truly is a cause worthy of my help!` So he picks you up and helps you along..What kind of horrible god would be like that? You seem to be implying that god was willing to change the laws of gravity for a split second to help out some guy who was going to fall over but was not willing to help out when there was the mercyless butchering of innocent people. If he was willing to change the laws of gravity for you why was he not willing to say, cause the terrorists on 9 11 to get some grit in their eye and not be able to hit the twin towers? Or some equally minor thing which could have saved the lives of thousands of innocents? Not to mention the fact that the God in the bible does NOT do things such as pick people up when they fall over...I am constantly astounded by your comments, you are extremely deffensive of your religion and determined to get people to believe in it, yet you do not seem to understand what it is you are trying to get people to believe.

Picking up people who fall over is actually something far more suited to the Greek Gods, it sounds alot like the sort of mischievous thing Hermes would do, certainly not the Judeo Christian God. If you really believe that it was divine intervention perhaps you are following the wrong religion?

As a final point you do yourself no favours by stooping to childish insults, you say that psychologyprofessor has sexual problems. Do you have any evidence for that, or are you just believing it without any proof whatsoever(like some other things i could think of...)? At least when people insult you on here evidence is given, you are called a deluded idiot because well, your comments certainly suggest that. You also claim psychologyprofessor is lazy for not trying hard enough to believe in your god, how ridiculous, surely it is FAAR more intellectually lazy to not bother to understand how the world works and to simply answer anything you cannot get your head around with `God did it`.

^ Well said ChrissyChiChi,

I don`t think religious people understand how disgusting it is when they thank God for winning a sporting event, or finding a parking spot, or any inane daily happening.

Just as you said, the idea that God not only cares about, but is willing to intervene in meaningless drivel, but doesn`t care enough, or have the power, to stop atrocities occurring in the world.

Who`d want to follow that kinda dick deity.

this guy doesn`t know that there`s no god, no atheist does. you can pretend you do all day. but no matter which way you slice it you do not know that there`s no god...

btw im not a fundamentalist or an atheist or an agnostic. i simply do not know if theres a god or not, and i know that i never will.

mindovermatter Im pretty sure that makes you an agnostic...

I do not know for sure that there is not an invisible bright pink fairy in a blue thong that lives in the back of my garden either. I am rather confident I will not be able to prove that there is not one too but I would say that I am 99.9999999999999% certain that my garden is free from skantily clad fairies. That is pretty much how I feel about religion.

^ Good point mindovermatter.

I think he should have chosen his words more carefully, although I still understand what he means. He knows there is no God in the same way he knows there are no faeries, invisible unicorns, or flying spaghetti monsters.

They are so unlikely that you might as well say you know they don`t exist. It doesn`t mean 100% certain, but maybe 99.9%.
I`d certainly bet that there is no God, or unicorns. But it is at least hypothetically possible. Still I have no problem with the actual statement that he knows, I just wish he had clarified it for the literalist listeners like yourself.

Edit: Dang Chrissy, you are just too fast. Sorry for basically repeating your point :)

I consider myself agnostic.Mainly in the sense I dont ever expect to "know", and I`m too wise to "believe".This is an entire lifes progression from being raised a catholic, discovering the ability to question and becoming an athiest. After much thought I consider the fact that the planet, and the universe are much more complex than my ability to understand them. However, I respect the power of religion in people`s lives, as I feel it does more good for them because I don`t think the majority is prepared or responsible enough to discover for themself.
I would say I have just as much problem with religion and wars as I do with people who feel they have an explanation based on ideas.I don`t buy either story.(oh and the big bang- what happened before it- was a big collision, and before that, a big exapansion, and before that, another big bang, etc until infinity, a constant vibration of energy<p.s. where is your god now?>)

At such a primitive point in our history I would not be so hasty to jump on any band wagon when it comes to science or Religion, as you could end up looking like one of the flat Earthers who were burried with an embarressed red face!

We have more questions than answers when it comes to the Universe and where we came from, the answers we get from science are generally changed/updated or proven wrong over time as we progress further into the future.

Sadly due to the sheepish nature of mankind, its generally only a few wise men battling against the masses of arrogance in our society who eventually prove and change the views of mankinds scientific perception in almost every circumstance.

This man is just an immature, arrogant fool, Im sure your own intuition will advance your thoughts further on the big questions, rather than this mans claimed knowlegde.

He doesn`t speak for all people who didn`t have religion crammed up their asses from a young age. From the time I was born (I`m Canadian, born in Holland) I was raised without religion. The first time it was ever brought to my attention was 3rd grade (The first time I attended school in Canada after living all over Europe and South America). I asked my mother "What religion are we?" She answered "Well, I believe that if you are good to yourself and good to others, you go to a place called heaven." Nuff said. Never went to church, but started praying before games, dates, the lotto. Eventually moved to Japan (On my own) and tried Buddhism, since it seemed the most `peaceful`. But now I`m Christian and the story of how I became a Christian is long. I don`t believe in organize religion and I don`t believe that any scientist can be 100 percent atheist either. Scientists generally leave the possibility for changes in their thinking. Dawkin`s himself says out of 7 he`s a 6.9. He also said that in all likely hood, Jesus did live. This is a smart man, although when it comes to religion I disagree with him.

I agree with what he said but being Atheist over being Agnostic is just ignorant. No one knows there is no God for a fact, sure you can be almost certain that all human made religions are bullshit but to say you know there is no God/Creator is just as bad as saying you know there is a God.

Hell for all we know we are part of some alien experiment and they are our creators. Probably not but you get my point. :p

Being Agnostic is the only logical position simply because we don`t know.

^ That`s why I`m an agnostic when it comes to underpant gnomes, if they can`t be disproven then they must be a a worthy consideration, right? You should also know that the existence of god is less likely than the probability of me being an alien... good thing we consider such occurrences as improbable or practically impossible.
